Toyota Camry Discontinued in Home Market

Toyota has officially announced the cessation of production and sales of the Camry in the Japanese market by the end of 2022. This decision has surprised many as the Camry has been a popular D-segment sedan in the Land of the Rising Sun for over 40 years.

The main reason is the popularity of SUV and MPV models in Japan, which has led to a decline in consumer demand for sedans, coupled with a shortage of semiconductors. In 2022, only around 6,000 Camry vehicles were sold in Japan, accounting for less than 1% of the global total sales of this model.

In addition to poor sales, the top automaker in Japan also believes that the Camry has fulfilled its role in the domestic market and will focus on regions where this model is in high demand. New generations of the Camry are still being developed, primarily to serve export needs to international markets.
