On March 2nd, on his personal page, Mr. Huynh Tran Thanh (artist Tran Thanh) announced that the film ‘Mai’ has reached 480 billion VND after 21 days of release. However, according to data from Box Office Vietnam, as of March 2nd, the film has reached 500 billion VND in revenue.

Explaining this number, Tran Thanh clarified: “Honestly, the accurate number that the distributor calculated and sent me via email every day has not reached that number yet.”

Tran Thanh also doesn’t understand the formula and statistical technology of Box Office to get the number of 500 billion. But that number is only relatively correct compared to the actual number, not completely accurate. The margin of error can range from 5 – 10%, depending on the time. The male artist has to clarify this so that the audience does not misunderstand why the numbers on Box Office Vietnam have exceeded 500 billion but Tran Thanh only posted posters with lower numbers.

The male director of the film ‘Mai’ also affirmed that the number announced by Box Office is only relatively accurate for reference, and the accurate number is announced by Tran Thanh himself because it is calculated by the film’s official distributor. In addition, the director also expressed his gratitude to the audience for supporting ‘Mai’ to make the film surpass ‘Nha Ba Nu’ and become the highest-grossing film in the history of Vietnamese cinema with 480 billion VND.

In conclusion, Tran Thanh stated that the 500 billion VND figure on Box Office is calculated by an independent unit, not part of the distribution system of the film MAI, so its accuracy is only relatively for reference. The accurate number is the one announced by the official distributor of the film, CJ HK Entertainment.

Previously, on February 21st, Tran Thanh announced that the revenue of the film Mai reached 360 billion VND, while at the same time Box Office Vietnam reported a figure of 390.5 billion VND, which is about 30.5 billion VND higher than Tran Thanh’s number. Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong, the founder of Box Office, explained that it is related to VAT tax.

“The numbers that the producers receive are the amount after deducting VAT tax. As for the data that Box Office Vietnam collects, it scans data on the ticket-selling page, and the ticket prices displayed on the ticket-selling page already include VAT tax. Therefore, even in the case where both sides have 100% accurate ticket count, the revenue that Box Office Vietnam reports is always about 10% higher than the amount that the producers receive,” explained Mr. Nguyen Khanh Duong.
