Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh meets bilateral leaders at ASEAN-Australia High-Level Conference

On the occasion of attending the Special Commemorative ASEAN-Australia Summit, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh took the opportunity to meet with all the high-level leaders from ASEAN countries, Australia, New Zealand, Timor Leste, and the ASEAN Secretary-General on March 5th and 6th.

During the meetings, the Prime Minister of Vietnam conveyed the greetings of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and other key leaders of Vietnam to the high-level leaders of other countries and the ASEAN Secretary-General.

The Prime Minister expressed gratitude for the cooperation, support, and sharing of experiences from other countries in economic recovery and development. He expressed the desire to promote cooperation in the key pillars of ASEAN and Vietnam’s relations with other countries, particularly in politics and diplomacy, economics, trade, and investment, security and defense, education and training, science and technology, etc. The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for close collaboration to build a united and stronger ASEAN, promoting internal cooperation and enhancing the central role of ASEAN in addressing security and strategic issues in the region.

On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh invited high-level leaders of other countries to send representatives to the ASEAN Future Forum, which is scheduled to be held in Hanoi on April 23, 2024.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese expressed his pleasure to meet Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh again. He expressed anticipation for the official visit of the Vietnamese Prime Minister to Australia, with the aim of elevating the bilateral relationship to a new level.

Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone agreed to enhance the implementation of the agreements between the high-level leaders of the two countries, especially the important results of the high-level meeting between the Communist Party of Vietnam and the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party. He expressed gratitude and high appreciation for Vietnam’s active support in Laos’ assumption of the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2024.

Brunei Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah agreed to intensify high-level visits and cooperation in the Halal sector. He expressed the desire to visit Vietnam again soon.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo agreed to strengthen cooperation in rice trade and agricultural collaboration, particularly in aquaculture and lobster farming. He suggested that Vietnam encourage Vinfast to invest in the electric vehicle sector.

Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin agreed to hold a joint Cabinet meeting and boost economic connectivity between the two countries.

Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos proposed close cooperation between the two countries in rice breeding and climate change adaptation, including the phenomenon of El Nino.

Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong agreed to promote the development of Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks (VSIP) and cooperation in digital transformation, green economy, digital economy, and population data management.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim congratulated Vietnam on its rapid development in many fields and expressed the desire to learn from Vietnam in attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). He emphasized the need for close coordination between the two countries in attracting foreign investment and agreed to promote high-level visits, implement bilateral cooperation mechanisms and agreements, and sign a cooperation agreement in the Halal sector soon.

During the meeting with Australian Prime Minister’s guest Christopher Luxon, New Zealand Prime Minister expressed joy in preparing to welcome Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit. He highly appreciated Vietnam’s role in ASEAN and affirmed that New Zealand would cooperate closely with Vietnam and other ASEAN countries on common regional issues.

Timor-Leste Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao expressed the desire to visit Vietnam officially soon and valued Vietnam’s support for Timor-Leste in becoming an official member of ASEAN.

The ASEAN Secretary-General highly appreciated the Vietnamese officials working at the ASEAN Secretariat and pledged to continue attention and create conditions for an increased number of Vietnamese to work at the Secretariat. He affirmed personal participation and the participation of the ASEAN Secretariat in the ASEAN Future Forum to be held in Vietnam. He hopes that the Forum will be organized annually and become the leading platform for discussing issues related to the future of ASEAN.
