The project is scheduled to be completed from 2024-2025. The Project Management Board of Ho Chi Minh Highway is responsible for maximizing the use of investment project documents approved by the Minister of MOT and research results (if any) to serve research and preparation of the project’s pre-feasibility study report.
The Cam Lo – La Son Expressway on the East Side of the North-South Highway, with a length of over 98 km, was put into operation on January 1, 2023, with the ordinary road segment (phase-by-phase) Cam Lo – La Son is invested with a scale of 2 lanes, a road base width of 12 m. The passing lanes are designed with a scale of the complete phase invested with 4 lanes, a road base width of 23.25 m.
Preliminary calculations show that upgrading and expanding the road section from a scale of 2 lanes to the standard 4 lanes, with continuous emergency lanes, will require about VND 6,500 billion.
According to Mr. Nguyen Vu Quy, Director of the Project Management Board of Ho Chi Minh Highway, the Cam Lo – La Son expressway started construction in September 2019 and will be completed and put into operation in December 2022. In 2023, the Project Management Board of Ho Chi Minh Highway handed over 11 packages to the Vietnam Road Administration. By the end of the second quarter of 2024, the Board will complete the final settlement of the packages.
Previously, on February 18, 2024, at Km48 + 200 on the Cam Lo – La Son expressway passing through Thua Thien – Hue province, an extremely serious traffic accident occurred, resulting in 3 fatalities. After the accident, public opinion has raised various opinions about the effectiveness and traffic safety of this 2-lane expressway.
Based on the actual operation of 2-lane investment expressways and the serious traffic accident on the Cam Lo – La Son expressway, Minister of MOT Nguyen Van Thang has requested relevant units to listen and absorb feedback from public opinion, immediately review and report to the MOT solutions to organize traffic in the most optimal way with the existing infrastructure conditions.
Emphasizing the current situation of the Cam Lo – La Son expressway, the Minister of MOT requested immediate identification of tasks to be done, ensuring good operation while minimizing accidents until the road is expanded according to the planning. In which, organizing scientific traffic on the road and ensuring safety is an important issue.
The MOT has also requested the Vietnam Expressway Corporation to review technical infrastructure-related issues; and the Project Management Board of Ho Chi Minh Highway to complete the settlement of the project soon, submit it to the MOT, the Government, and the National Assembly, and prepare an investment list to arrange capital for the expansion of 4 lanes.
