Customer Accused of Being Insulted by Ms. Nhan’s Looks
Nhan’s duck noodle shop is known as a famous and delicious noodle shop in Hanoi. Despite having a simple sign and being located in a small courtyard, the shop is always crowded with people lining up to enjoy their food. However, the shop owner has caused a lot of controversy by continuously being accused of insulting and cursing customers, displaying a lack of cultural manners in her service, which has left many people shocked and earned her the nickname “insulting noodle shop.”
Recently, in an article posted by T.T.B.C. on social media, there were some complaints about unpleasant experiences while eating at the shop.
According to B.C.’s sharing, knowing that customers need to buy drinks to sit inside, but due to not having the habit of drinking while eating, B.C. decided to arrive early to sit outside. When arriving at the shop around 9:40 am, even though the shop was not open yet, there were already many people waiting. At the same time, B.C. was informed by the staff to go somewhere else and come back later because “the shop can’t give you just one portion.”
However, because the shop was quite far from home and also known for its famous noodle, B.C. decided to wait. When Ms. Nhan came down and saw the customer waiting alone, she not only refused to sell but also used inappropriate language. According to B.C., Ms. Nhan even cursed them when they were leaving with their car.
The article received many responses from the online community right after it was posted:
“It’s lucky that the shop can still make money like this. I have eaten there once, even though I wasn’t cursed, I will never go back. Having to hear her insulting customers throughout the whole meal, it’s really hard to swallow the food. It’s extremely disgusting.”
“We live nearby, but we never eat there. Hanoi has so many good places to eat that we don’t have to stand in line for.”
However, many people believe that they need to hear both sides of the story to know more clearly.
“Insulting employees is common; it’s only considered swearing if it’s not intentional”
Clip: Nhan’s duck noodle shop closes after a day of being accused of rejecting customers |
On March 14th, one day after the article was posted, we visited Nhan’s duck noodle shop. However, the shop was closed and not operating. According to the directions from the locals in the surrounding area, Ms. Nhan could be found at the end of a small alley. After asking a hired worker, this person also didn’t know where Ms. Nhan had gone.
“She just started working here yesterday. She gets paid 5 million VND per month and works from 4 am to 1 pm with a break.”
That’s what a new employee of Ms. Nhan’s shop said.
When asking the locals in the surrounding area, some people said that the incident posted on social media was true, but it wasn’t a big deal. Because Ms. Nhan frequently had disputes and arguments with employees as well as neighbors, it was like an everyday occurrence for the people living there.
“Employees are fired after just 3 days, no one can work for a whole month. Some people can only last for a week, and some can’t even last for 3 days. Everyone hates it here,” said an elderly neighbor talking about the “staff” situation at the famous Hanoi duck noodle shop. However, whether what this person said is true or not, we still have to wait for Ms. Nhan to speak up.
Another person said that the shop usually opened at 10 am, but today it wasn’t open and they didn’t know what had happened. Although that was the case, when asked about the owner’s personality, this person also became disheartened:
“Normally, it’s very annoying here, no one can stand it. Every day, she gets angry, and if there are no customers when the shop opens, she gets angry. She scolds the neighbors and customers normally, and employees all the time.
“We have to constantly change employees, replacing them about twice a month. Some months, we have to change them 3 or 4 times because they can’t handle it. If you scold people a lot, they will get mad after just 1 or 2 days. If you can tolerate for a long time, you can work for a long time, otherwise, you can just quit. Scolding employees a lot, if it’s not as they wish, they get scolded.”
Not only does she shout at employees, customers, and neighbors, but many people also say that Ms. Nhan herself is very picky with customers, not everyone can buy from her:
“If you don’t have money (if you don’t look wealthy), she might even despise and refuse to sell to you. She has to be selective in selling; not everyone can buy. Poor people like this will never be able to buy, to say it bluntly.”
Why does Nhan’s duck noodle shop, despite its bad reputation, still have a lot of customers?
One thing that many people wonder about is that even though the shop is continuously “infamous for insulting customers,” Nhan’s duck noodle shop is always packed with customers. At certain times of the day, customers have to line up and wait. This contradiction has raised many questions among netizens.
Nhan’s duck noodles are loved by many people because of their sweet and nourishing duck broth, as well as the tender meat which doesn’t become mushy when cooked. Moreover, the noodles here are also outstanding, acknowledged by the customers as something that few places can match.
When asked about being cursed by the owner but still accepting it to enjoy a delicious bowl of noodles or not, Mr. V. from Hanoi said: “I don’t think anyone can enjoy a good meal if they are constantly being insulted. I admit that Ms. Nhan is indeed harsh with customers, but I got used to it. I quickly placed my order and waited without disturbing her work, so she didn’t show any attitude towards me. Of course, I don’t expect to receive attentive service like at a high-end restaurant, so I don’t demand much.”
