Farmer selling “super cheap” chicken eggs on the streets of Hanoi

Hanoi is now witnessing a surge in self-established and unexpectedly cheap chicken egg vendors. What could be the reason behind this phenomenon?

In recent days, on some streets in Hanoi such as Nguyen Chi Thanh, Huynh Thuc Khang, Nguyen Khang, Nguyen Phong Sac… there have appeared points of sale that advertise eggs for as low as 65,000 VND/30 eggs. This surprising price is incredibly cheap.

Super cheap egg-selling points have appeared on some streets in Hanoi

Minh (from Thanh Oai, Hanoi) said: “Traders buy it at ridiculously cheap prices from the farm and even refuse to import, so my family has to rescue ourselves by selling the remaining eggs in Hanoi retail”

At a price of over 2,000 VND/egg, which is much higher than the wholesale price, Minh sells about 6,000 – 7,000 eggs daily. At this time, not only Minh’s family but also many other breeding households in the area accept to break even instead of expecting profit.

Eggs are packaged in bags of 30 eggs, making it quicker for people on the go to buy

Traders collect native chicken eggs directly from the farms for only 17,000 – 18,000 VND/ 10 eggs, which is nearly 1,000 VND/egg cheaper compared to the Tet period, making the breeders face difficulties.

With this price, breeders in large farms in Vinh Phuc, Hoa Binh, and Ha Nam will either break even or bear losses depending on the household. With the current humid weather, breeders need to invest in egg preservation systems in addition to daily expenses for electricity, water, and animal feed.

Explaining this situation, Pham Van The, a trader who has been collecting eggs for many years from farms and transporting them to all northern provinces, said: “Eggs are mainly supplied to kitchens in companies, factories, or for night shift workers. This year, due to the difficult economy, companies and factories have fewer jobs which leads to reduced night shifts”.

Supply remains the same but reduced demand makes egg consumption slow during the first month of the year

At the beginning of the year, restaurants and service businesses are always slower compared to other periods. Combined with the stock from the Tet period and the fact that workers quit their jobs, people tend to go on vacation, resulting in almost no egg consumption. It usually takes a few months at the beginning of each year as well. For example, in 2023, this situation lasted for 4.5 months after the Lunar New Year.

According to Mr. The, this situation is expected to continue for another 1-2 months until the activities of companies and people stabilize after the post-Tet holiday season.
