According to the 2021-2030 provincial planning of Bac Lieu, with a vision to 2050 that has been approved, Giá Rai town will become a city under the province by 2030; after 2030 – the vision for 2050, it will meet the criteria and standards of a type II urban area.
By taking advantage of its proximity to the city, the river, and the road, Giá Rai town has almost fully utilized its potential and strengths to achieve breakthrough success. Specifically, in 2023, Giá Rai town has properly managed and implemented the economic and social development plan, increasing the proportion of industry and gradually reducing the proportion of agriculture and aquaculture, including: Industry – construction reached 49.9%; Trade – services reached 33%; Agriculture – aquaculture reached 17.1%. The average per capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) reached 102 million VND. The total social investment on the town’s territory reached 5,452 billion 223 million VND, of which the investment capital from the state budget reached over 559 billion VND….
In terms of geographical location, Giá Rai is adjacent to two major cities, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau, so the town has many advantages in commercial and service development. The two provinces have in common the strength of aquaculture, so when dozens of seafood processing plants in Giá Rai are established, they have timely met the demands for purchasing and processing seafood from the people of the two provinces.
Annually, Giá Rai town exports over 30,000 tons of frozen seafood, accounting for over 80% of the province’s total output. These industries have contributed to solving the problem of tens of thousands of local workers and employment.
In addition, Giá Rai also possesses famous spiritual tourism sites nationwide such as Tanh Say Church, Noc Nang national historical relic site, which contain evidence of the heroic struggle of Mười Chức and the local people against the powerful landlords and colonial French officials. Besides, Phong Thanh Tay communal bird garden, Giồng Bốm historical relic area, ancient Khmer temples… are also interesting tourist spots for visitors to explore and experience the local cultural identity.
With the current tourism products system, Giá Rai town has become an attractive destination for domestic and international tourists and contributes over 20% to the total number of visitors to Bac Lieu each year.
Accelerating towards the destination
In 2024, Giá Rai town also determines the focus of developing the economy towards digitization, integration; adapting to climate change; increasing added value and sustainable development associated with building an advanced new rural area, a model new rural area, and a civilized new rural area. The focus is on developing agriculture applying high-tech, value chain linkage.
In the 2023 conference to summarize the work in various fields, deploy orientations and tasks for 2024, the Party Committee of Giá Rai town announced specific targets such as: the state budget revenue reaching 132 billion VND; seafood output reaching 42,700 tons; food output reaching 196,700 tons; building 1 commune achieving advanced new rural standards and 1 model new rural commune; completing the construction of 2 ward establishment projects; developing 150 new Party members and at least 93% of Party grassroots organizations successfully fulfilling their tasks and more…
The authorities of Giá Rai town also encourage companies and enterprises to expand production and business, invest in modern production lines and technologies to increase productivity, product quality, produce value-added goods while protecting the environment; develop a synchronized power grid system, prioritize electricity for agricultural and seafood processing production, and ensure a power supply for people’s daily lives.
With new beliefs, new momentum, and new determination, it is believed that units and localities will unite, be dynamic, creative along with the entire Party Committee, the political system, and the people of the town to successfully achieve the goals, become a satellite city in terms of economy and commerce of the province; worthy to be a satellite city, a bridge between Bac Lieu City and Ca Mau City; strive to become the seafood processing center of the province, increase seafood exports; a safe and attractive tourist destination; complete the construction of new rural areas and strive to become a city by 2025.
