Detik News, the leading news website in Indonesia, has interviewed the investigators of the incident. According to them, the damages in the case of the Mitsubishi Xpander crashing into a Porsche 911 in the showroom were approximately 5.7 billion IDR (9 billion VND). On the other hand, the highest-priced Mitsubishi Xpander in Indonesia is only about 500 million VND. This significant difference raises questions among netizens about whether the Xpander driver has enough financial resources to compensate for the damages.

The answer is yes. The police reported that the driver has taken responsibility and is ready to compensate.
According to the information from the police, the probable cause of the accident is that the Xpander driver had consumed alcohol at home before driving to the showroom. His house is quite close to the showroom. Perhaps, he thought that drinking a little alcohol and driving a short distance would not cause any serious problems. This person drove the Xpander to the showroom, but the police did not disclose whether he went there to buy a car or just to look.
Ivan’s Motor is a luxury car showroom located in an affluent area. The driver himself is a businessman (the specific industry is unknown). Therefore, it can be seen that the Mitsubishi Xpander driver belongs to a quite affluent class.
Another sign that the Mitsubishi Xpander driver is “well-off” can be seen from the license plate of the car. Although it is an ordinary car, this MPV model has a special license plate: B-8958, which was purchased separately.
In Indonesia, there are 4 types of special license plates: 1-digit, 2-digit, 3-digit, and 4-digit. Each type is further divided into two subtypes: without letters (more expensive) and with letters. Among them, the 1-digit license plate without letters is the most expensive, with a maintenance cost of 31.5 million VND for 5 years. The 4-digit license plate with letters is the “cheapest”, with a maintenance cost of 8 million VND for 5 years.
In Indonesia, vehicle owners can purchase a private license plate for a price that depends on the number of digits (the fewer digits, the higher the price) and whether it has letters (without letters is more expensive).
The license plate of the Mitsubishi Xpander involved in this case is a 4-digit plate without letters. This plate has a conversion price of 12 million VND and needs to be paid once every 5 years for maintenance.
However, on the victim’s side, Ivan’s Motor showroom still wants to take the case to court. The police stated that Ivan’s Motor does not trust the Mitsubishi Xpander driver as they are afraid that he may prolong the compensation under various reasons. Therefore, they expect the pressure from the court to ensure that the Mitsubishi Xpander driver fulfills his responsibilities.
