Earlier this year, Mazda announced that it would officially stop selling the Mazda 6 in the Japanese market from April. This decision comes after similar withdrawals in North America in 2021 and in the UK last year.
Customers can still pre-order the remaining inventory of this product before it is completely discontinued. In the meantime, Mazda is believed to be accelerating the launch of its new replacement for the Mazda 6.
According to Autohome, Mazda has registered copyright for two new car names in China: EZ-6 and EZ-60. They are positioned in the 4-door sedan and SUV segments respectively. Among them, Mazda EZ-6 is said to be the replacement for the Mazda 6 and is expected to be unveiled at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show in April.
Chinese media revealed that this could be a vehicle produced by the joint venture between Mazda and Changan established in 2023. At that time, the joint venture confirmed that it would launch 6 models in 2024, including 2 new soft-top sedans with the codenames J90A and J90A-REEV.
Based on the EV (electric vehicle) suffix in the name, analysts predict that Mazda’s new model could have both pure electric and hybrid versions. It is believed to use Changan’s EPA1 platform, which supports hybrid and electric powertrains, instead of Mazda’s upcoming expandable SkyActiv EV architecture.
As for the SUV EZ-60, the vehicle was previously introduced by Changan Mazda with the codename J90K and will be launched in 2025. Similar to the EZ-6 or J90A, the new SUV model will be offered in both regular and pure electric versions.
Additionally, Changan Mazda has also hinted that it will introduce two more products in 2026. However, the company currently refers to them as SUV NEV and CAR NEV without any specific descriptions.
