The Cam Lo – La Son expressway currently has 9 locations designed with 4 lanes allowing vehicles to overtake. According to the representative of the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board, the entire Cam Lo – La Son expressway currently has 11 construction teams in various categories. The overall progress has reached about 30% of the workload. Due to the construction conditions in the context of normal road operations, a large number of vehicles with high-speed travel, the Ho Chi Minh Road Project Management Board requires the contractor to focus on ensuring the safety of workers in construction sites, especially the installation of reflective studs on the centerline between two lanes.
Mr. Pham Dinh Duat, the representative of the construction contractor for the section of the road in Thua Thien – Hue province, said that due to the large workload and the urgent completion time within half a month, the company has arranged labor, construction equipment, and materials with the highest determination. The company currently has 5 construction sites. Due to the foggy weather and the lack of street lights at night, the company plans to strengthen 1 – 2 daytime working teams to meet the committed progress with the completion by the end of March 2024.
The Cam Lo – La Son expressway is over 98km long, connecting Quang Tri province and Thua Thien – Hue province, being invested in phases. In the initial operation phase, the road has two lanes with a road width of 12m, while the overtaking section has a scale of 4 lanes and a roadbed width of 23m. After more than a year of operation, the road has been effective, contributing to reducing travel time between localities and promoting socio-economic development. However, due to the absence of toll collection, many vehicles choose to travel on this road. Meanwhile, many infrastructure items that ensure safety according to highway standards have not been fully invested.
According to the People’s Committee of Thua Thien – Hue province, the volume of vehicles on the Cam Lo – La Son expressway in 2023 is from 2,500 – 3,500 vehicles/day and night. During the Tet holiday (February 2024), the traffic density increased to 5,000 – 6,000 vehicles/day and night. Recently, on this expressway, there have been consecutive extremely serious traffic accidents on February 18, 2024, and March 10, 2024, causing 5 deaths and 5 injuries.
