The Meaning of True Living, Explored and Answered
Referred to as a genius architect and a highly influential Japanese contemporary architect, Kengo Kuma has astounded the globe. He has established a unique and resilient style of Japanese architecture. Different yet harmonious, modern and functional, minimalist and filled with the wisdom of the East.
Recently he was appointed as an advisor to help rebuild the city of Wajima, which was severely damaged by Japan’s strongest earthquake in 13 years in early 2024. He is also known for leaving his mark worldwide with the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Stadiums and over 70 magnificent works, including the China Academy of Art’s Folk Art Museum, the Hotel Paris, the Xinjin Zhi Museum, the Taketa Museum of History and Culture, “Welcome, feeling at work” in Italy… and more.
Kengo Kuma’s architectural style is guided by the concept of “humble architecture,” which emphasizes the relationship between humans and nature. Before beginning a project, he spends considerable time researching the location, terrain, community, and natural surroundings to select the most appropriate materials and design approach.
Most recently, Kuma and his KKAA team flew to Vietnam from Japan to design The Miyabi, a unique enclave within Vinhomes Royal Island. They spent months on Vu Yen Island to learn about local culture, materials, and the natural environment, including the river, wind, plants, and animals. The result is The Miyabi, a truly unique creation meticulously designed down to the smallest detail, akin to a masterpiece of island living.
It is no exaggeration to say that The Miyabi has been meticulously crafted by the renowned architect as a testament to his passion, allowing each homeowner to fully appreciate the harmonious fusion of architecture and unspoiled nature, embodying the minimalist yet profound philosophy of quality living that the Japanese value.
“The Japanese have sought the answer to the question ‘what is true human happiness?’ I believe that in the future, the Vietnamese people will also contemplate the nature of happiness. And I am infusing my thoughts into Vietnamese architecture,” he once shared.
