Speaking at the Conference, FPT Corporation Chairman Truong Gia Binh shared that a week ago, during a meeting with the US Ambassador, the Japanese Ambassador, and the Singapore Ambassador, one of the ambassadors told him: “You do not know how great the opportunity is for your country. But you only have 18 months.”
“They did not explain to me why. There are two issues: First, what is the opportunity, and second, what is the deadline?” – Mr. Binh said.
The Chairman of FPT Corporation emphasized that the opportunity is in semiconductors. The semiconductor industry selects the country, the people. But Vietnam only has 18 months because the world will not wait for us. And the world will have to choose another way if Vietnam does not respond in time. At all costs, the world must not be short of chips.
During the Covid-19 period, leading US automakers could not sell their products. The Semiconductor Association of America went to various countries, promoting, creating a list, building, and now investing heavily in the possibility of production to prevent the supply chain from being disrupted. The Japanese government and other countries are doing the same.
“I strongly support the Prime Minister’s approach, which alone may be able to make it in time. We have to calculate 18 months by approaching gradually and innovating. I agree with the approach of Minister Nguyen Chi Dung that we are looking at very big problems, and we are not doing small things,” said Mr. Binh.
The businessman also revealed that when Mr. Jensen Huang – CEO of NVIDIA came to Vietnam, he said: Vietnam is the only country that can participate in all stages of the semiconductor supply chain.
“Innovation is crucial. We must innovate in the system. Within 18 months, we must demonstrate: Vietnam not only has the opportunity but is also committed to that opportunity,” Mr. Binh concluded – “Commitment, as Minister Nguyen Manh Hung said: Vietnam must become a human resource hub (center). So how to become a human resource hub (center) immediately? The government and 7 universities in Taiwan came to the National University, University of Science, University of Technology, and FPT to recruit. Countries are willing to sponsor tuition fees, airfares, living expenses… everything. And we have to meet as much of their human resource needs as possible. Because they said: there is a shortage of 1 million people. We need to show that Vietnam has students who are ready to study.”
