How the Richest Have Fared in Five of China’s Top-Tier Cities Over the Past Five Years

The result of the General Statistics Office’s Living Standards Survey, 2022 marked the year of economic and living recovery. After two consecutive years, 2019 and 2020, of income per capita decline due to the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic, the average monthly income per person in 2022 has turned back to the increasing trend like in years before 2019.

According to the latest report, in 2022, the average monthly income per person reached 4.67 million VND, an increase of 11.1% compared to 2021. Among the six regions, the Southeast region had the highest average monthly income per person in 2022 (6.33 million VND). The region with the lowest average monthly income per person was the North Central and Central Highlands (3.17 million VND).

It is noteworthy that the 2022 survey on living standards by the General Statistics Office provided data on expenditure differences between the five income groups. The term “5 income groups” refers to the total number of surveyed individuals arranged in ascending order of average per capita income, then divided into five equal groups (each group representing 20% of the total population), including:

– Group 1: Lowest income group (poorest group);

– Group 2: Below-average income group;

– Group 3: Average income group;

– Group 4: Relatively high income group;

– Group 5: Highest income group (wealthiest group).

Accordingly, the richest household group (the group comprising the wealthiest 20% of the population – group 5) had an average monthly income per person of 10.23 million VND, 7.6 times higher than the poorest household group (the group comprising the poorest 20% of the population – group 1).

Considering the five central cities of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, and Can Tho, the average monthly income of residents has changed significantly over the past five years, from 2018 to 2022.

During this period, the average income of the richest group in Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, and Da Nang showed a slight increase from 2018 to 2019, then decreased in 2020 and recovered in the following two years. Specifically, in Ho Chi Minh City, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group increased slightly from 13.63 million VND/person/month (2018) to 14.39 million VND/person/month (2019), then decreased to 11.86 million VND/person/month (2020). By 2022, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in Ho Chi Minh City gradually recovered compared to the previous two years, reaching 12.85 million VND/person/month.

In Hai Phong, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in the city increased slightly from 11.84 million VND/person/month (2018) to 12.15 million VND/person/month (2019), then decreased to 9.43 million VND/person/month (2020). By 2022, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in Hai Phong gradually recovered compared to the previous two years, reaching 11.99 million VND/person/month.

As for Da Nang, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in the city increased slightly from 12.59 million VND/person/month (2018) to 12.87 million VND/person/month (2019), then decreased to 10.89 million VND/person/month (2020). By 2022, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in Da Nang gradually recovered compared to the previous two years, reaching 12.6 million VND/person/month.

It is worth noting that the monthly average income recorded the most significant fluctuations among the richest groups in Hanoi and Can Tho. Specifically, the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in Hanoi in 2019 decreased sharply from 13.86 million VND/person/month (2018) to 11 million VND/person/month, a decrease of around 20% within one year. It showed signs of recovering in subsequent years. By 2022, the average income level had improved compared to 2019, reaching 13.4 million VND/person/month.

In Can Tho, the data from the General Statistics Office indicates that the average monthly income per person in the richest household group in Can Tho increased significantly from 10.57 million VND/person/month (2018) to 12.71 million VND/person/month (2020), an increase of around 20.2% over two years, but showed signs of declining in subsequent years. By 2022, the average income level reached only 11.13 million VND/person/month.
