On April 26, from the temporary detention center, Ms. Truong My Lan (68 years old, Chairwoman of Van Thinh Phat Group) filed an appeal against the entire first-instance judgment.
According to the appeal, Ms. Lan presented objective reasons for participating in the restructuring of Saigon Commercial Joint Stock Bank (SCB), leading to risks, but the defendant did not embezzle money from SCB.
Currently, HCMC People’s Court is also gathering the appeals of the defendants and persons related to the case.
Previously, on April 11, the HCMC People’s Court sentenced the defendant Truong My Lan to death for the crime of “Embezzlement of property”, 20 years in prison for the crime of “Bribery”, 20 years in prison for the crime of “Violating regulations on lending in the activities of credit institutions”. The total combined sentence is the death penalty.

Ms. Lan’s husband, the defendant Chu Lap Co (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Times Square Investment JSC) was sentenced to 9 years in prison for the crime of “Violating regulations on banking activities and other activities related to banking activities”.
The niece, the defendant Truong Hue Van (former General Director of Van Thinh Phat Group Investment JSC), was sentenced to 17 years in prison for two crimes of “Embezzlement of property” and “Violating regulations on lending in the activities of credit institutions”.

The HCMC People’s Court also sentenced 4 life sentences to 4 defendants, including 3 former high-ranking leaders at SCB: defendant Dinh Van Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors (fugitive, tried in absentia), defendant Bui Anh Dung, Chairman of the Board of Directors; defendant Vo Tan Hoang Van, CEO; and defendant Do Thi Nhan, former Head of the Inspection and Supervision Agency of the State Bank’s Bank II, for the crime of receiving a bribe of 5.2 million USD.
