According to self-driving rental apps, about ten days ago, the number of customers booking rental cars for the April 30 and May 1 holidays was only around 30%, so there was a large surplus of cars. Therefore, the rental companies agreed not to increase prices to attract renters.

However, in the past few days, customers have flocked to book cars, leaving app owners and car owners alike scrambling. Rental apps are having a headache because they have already rented out cars at non-surge prices. Those who still have cars available for rent have announced that the rental price for the 5-day holiday will be 50% higher than normal.

Self-driving car rental services “attract” customers at the last minute

Speaking to reporters for Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper on the morning of April 27, representatives of applications (apps) and self-driving car rental companies said that for the past 3 days, the number of self-driving car rentals has increased dramatically. Due to the large number of customers, some apps have become overloaded and have been forced to announce that “there are no more cars available for rent”.

The reason for the increase in car rental bookings in the run-up to the holiday is explained by the companies as being that many people who had planned to travel or return to their hometowns have seen airfares rise too high and have therefore changed their plans and opted to rent a car instead.

Mr. Nguyen Van Long, Director of Sigo Vietnam Co., Ltd., said that at the last minute, the number of customers booking rental cars increased sharply, and the company no longer had enough cars to deliver. However, since it was not possible to give early notice, the company only dared to increase the price by 50% on the two main holidays, April 30 and May 1, while keeping it the same as usual on the other days.
