Largest project in Vietnam worth over 336,000 billion VND: Nearly 5,000 people working day and night during holidays with advanced technology, some items exceeding progress

The Long Thanh International Airport Project Management Board reported that the Long Thanh International Airport Project continued to be constructed 24/7 during the holidays from April 30th to May 1st.

Long Thanh International Airport, covering roughly 5,000 hectares in Long Thanh District, Dong Nai Province, will cost approximately $16 billion (more than VND 336,630 billion) to build. Upon completion, Long Thanh International Airport will serve as the nation’s largest airport with a planned capacity of 100 million passengers and 25 million tons of cargo annually.

Nearly 5,000 workers to labor around the clock throughout the holiday

The Long Thanh Airport Project Management Board stated that contractors have mobilized nearly 5,000 staff, engineers, and workers, along with thousands of pieces of equipment and machinery, to carry out project bid packages over the 30/4 – 1/5 holiday.

On the construction site, workers and engineers continue to work in three shifts and four teams, spread across various sections, including the passenger terminal, connecting roads, runways, taxiways, and aircraft parking aprons.

At the construction site connecting roads T1 and T2, engineers and workers are currently focusing on building bridge piers, producing super T beams, distributing crushed stone, and constructing a pedestrian underpass. This section employs 630 personnel and 196 pieces of machinery, which will operate throughout the holiday period.

Regarding Component Project 2 (air traffic management facilities), a representative of the Long Thanh Project Management Board revealed that 150 workers and engineers are currently on-site, and the project is progressing as planned, with certain sections even exceeding expectations. Structures such as the air traffic control tower, technical building, and radar station are all taking shape, and some are nearing structural completion.

At the air traffic control tower, the construction unit has completed the reinforced concrete structure up to the 10th floor’s floor beam. Currently, the air traffic control tower’s elevation has reached approximately 70m. Progress is exceeding the 30-day target, which will serve as a buffer for the upcoming rainy season. It is estimated that by November, the reinforced concrete portion of the control tower will reach a height of nearly 108m, and the tower will be completed by June 30, 2025.

Advanced technologies put to use

Based on the detailed construction progress of the main bid packages, the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) has directed design consultants to review the progress. This will allow for the creation of construction schedules for the bid packages to align with the implementation progress of the main bid packages currently under construction to minimize conflicts and overlaps. This is crucial for ensuring progress synchronization with the main structures and overall project progress.

In particular, ACV has collaborated with consulting units and construction contractors to leverage Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology during the design, construction, and project management phases. This allows for the anticipation of potential intersections between bid packages and ensures consistency among various technical aspects as well as overall project progress.

BIM is an advanced model that facilitates the effective creation and utilization of project information throughout the design, construction, and operation phases. Using BIM software, design consultants and construction contractors create a virtual representation of the structure. This model, which mirrors the actual construction site, is used to depict the entire lifecycle of a building project, from design and construction to operation.

Furthermore, to ensure security and safety, authorities are implementing facial recognition AI technology to strictly control access to the project site. Specifically, a surveillance camera system integrated with facial recognition AI technology and QR code scanning is used to monitor entry and exit at the airport construction area.

AI technology enhances security and traffic management capabilities at Vietnam’s most ambitious mega-project. According to the Long Thanh International Airport Project Management Board, QR codes are integrated into security cards issued by the project management board for all personnel and vehicles entering the airport. After the initial QR code scan, subsequent entries and exits will be automatically scanned, transmitting image data, the number of entries and exits, and the time of entry and exit for each person and vehicle.
