At the ongoing Beijing Auto Show 2024 in China, Chery has stolen the show, having on display a barrage of vehicles across its sub-brands. Among them is the Omoda 7, a new model revealed by Chery.
Described as a sporty coupe-SUV, the Omoda 7 measures 4,621 x 1,872 x 1,673 mm (length x width x height), while the wheelbase spans 2,700 mm. This makes the Omoda 7 larger than the soon-to-be-launched Omoda 5 in Vietnam and almost as big as the Honda CR-V.
The Chery Omoda 7 is said to embody three design concepts: dynamic, avant-garde and futuristic.
The exterior is dominated by an aggressive frameless trapezoidal grille, taking inspiration from the Lexus RX. It is flanked by sharp headlamps and enlarged air intakes on the front bumper, resembling the Omoda E5 electric car.
Elsewhere, the Omoda 7 sports multi-spoke, dual-tone, 20-inch alloy wheels with a diamond cut finish. Other noticeable details include conventional door handles, a rising window line towards the C-pillar, a fastback-like sloping roofline, a short and raked rear windscreen, and wraparound taillights at the back.
The taillights are designed to look like a series of arrowheads linked together, forming bolts of lightning.
Inside, the Chery Omoda 7’s cabin is full of quirky design touches. Most notably, the steering wheel design is inspired by the PlayStation 5 gamepad, aiming to provide a fun and ergonomic experience for the driver.
The front seats are also designed to resemble gaming chairs, upholstered in nubuck leather with prominent stitching, enhancing the sporty and comfortable feel.
The Chery Omoda 7 is equipped with a 15.6-inch central touchscreen, which is able to slide forward towards the front passenger. The display features a 2.5K resolution and up to 1,000 nits of brightness, allowing for gesture, voice or physical button control.
Other amenities include a built-in fragrance system, a Sony sound system with 12 speakers plus two subwoofers, and effective soundproofing to reduce engine noise intrusion into the cabin, creating a quieter space for occupants.
The Chery Omoda 7’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain consists of a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine. According to Chery, this powertrain has an average fuel consumption of 4.89 liters per 100 km, resulting in a possible driving range of up to 1,250 km.
In the future, the Omoda 7 will also be offered with a gasoline-only engine option, possibly a 1.6-liter four-cylinder unit like the one found in the Jaecoo J7. However, unlike the Omoda 5, the Omoda 7 is not expected to get a pure electric EV variant.
In terms of safety, the Chery Omoda 7 is equipped with advanced electronic braking and at least 18 active driver assistance systems (ADAS) features. On top of the usual ADAS features, the Omoda 7 adds a Lane Change Assist system, which can be activated via voice command.
Chery’s Omoda and Jaecoo brands are planned to be introduced in Vietnam this year. In the initial phase, the two brands will offer a total of four models in Vietnam, including the Omoda C5, Omoda E5, Jaecoo J7 and Jaecoo J7 PHEV.
