Agri-fishery exports soar 71.5%

According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total export value of agricultural, forestry and aquatic products was estimated at 19.06 billion USD in the first four months of 2024, marking an increase of 23.7% compared to the same period in 2023.

In addition, the import of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 14.32 billion USD. Thus, the trade surplus of the sector reached 4.74 billion USD in the first four months, up by 71.5%.

In April alone, the export value of agricultural, forestry and fishery products reached 5.14 billion USD, up by 19.7% compared to April 2023; of which, key agricultural products accounted for 2.83 billion USD (up by 29.2%), forestry products 1.39 billion USD (up by 18.6%), livestock products 40.8 million USD (up 5.9%). Meanwhile, the export value of fishery products was 730 million USD (down by 1.5%).

The overall export turnover increased over the first four months because all export groups saw a rise. The achievement was made possible by: agricultural products of 10.44 billion USD, increased by 32.5% year-on-year; forestry products of 5.18 billion USD, up by 22.8%; fishery products of 2.68 billion USD, up by 4.2%; and livestock products of 152 million USD, up by 3.6%.

Most key products saw higher export values than in the same period last year, including: wood and wooden products reaching 4.84 billion USD, up by 23.7%; coffee at 2.57 billion USD, up by 57.9%; rice at 2.08 billion USD, up by 36.5%; cashew nuts at 1.16 billion USD, up by 21.2%; vegetables and fruits at 1.8 billion USD, up by 32.1%; and shrimp at 937 million USD, up by 5.9%.

Many products enjoyed remarkable growth in average export prices, such as: rice at 644 USD/ton, up by 22.2%; coffee at 3,402 USD/ton, up by 49.7%; rubber at 1,487 USD/ton, up by 6.9%; and pepper at 4,214 USD/ton, up by 36.4%. Cashew nuts saw a decline to 5,375 USD/ton, down by 8.4%, and tea at 1,632 USD/ton, down by 2%.

In terms of markets, export values to all markets increased. Of which, exports to Asia rose by 19.8%; to America by 24.6%; to Europe by 38.6%; to Oceania by 26%; and to Africa by 332 million USD, up by 33.3%.

The United States, China and Japan remained the three largest import markets of Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry and fishery products. Specifically, the export value to the United States accounted for 20.1%, up by 25.7%; to China accounted for 18.9%, up by 15.1%; and to Japan accounted for 6.9%, up by 9.6%.

To maintain the high growth rate in exports, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that it will address market issues to facilitate the export of agricultural and fishery products, especially to markets such as China, the United States, Japan and the EU. At the same time, it will open up new markets with great potential, such as Islamic Halal countries, the Middle East and Africa.

The ministry will also make use of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), especially the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) and the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA) to boost the export of key agricultural, forestry and fishery products, and support businesses to sign new export orders.

The ministry will also coordinate with other ministries to support the protection of trademarks and geographical indications for Vietnam’s potential export products overseas.
