For instance, a 7-year-old durian orchard with an area of nearly 4 hectares belonging to Mr. Vu Xuan Hop’s family in Hamlet 5, Đường 10 commune, Bù Đăng district. For the past 2 months, the durian orchard has been experiencing yellow leaves, dark blue roots, sap oozing from the trunk, rapid tree exhaustion and lack of vitality. Despite trying all means of treatment, about 60 trees have died or been affected so far. The family’s irrigation and orchard care process has not changed in the recent past.

According to Mr. Hop, it takes a lot of effort and money to maintain a 7-year-old durian orchard. When the durian orchard was unexpectedly hit by a “strange disease” and began to die, his family suffered severe losses.

“At present, about 50 trees are affected and dead in the orchard. If the harvest at the end of the season was normal, we would have earned more than VND400 million with an average price of VND70,000 per kilogram,” Mr. Hop shared.

Mr. Dang Van Thai’s family in Đường 10, Bù Đăng district, faces a similar situation. According to Mr. Thai, with an area of 2 hectares, his family’s durian orchard generates approximately VND1 billion in revenue each year. However, the family has had to cut down branches, starting with small ones and then larger ones, and eventually the trunk. Initially, only 1 or 2 trees were affected, but now the number has risen to 34, significantly impacting the family’s finances.

According to statistics, in Đường 10, there are over 150 households growing durians, with a total area of approximately 200 hectares. This number has been increasing rapidly due to the high economic value of durians.

The current situation of mass durian tree deaths with unknown causes has caused significant concern among households. Local authorities are urging residents to destroy dead durian trees to prevent the spread of the disease. They also hope that relevant agencies will intervene soon to save the orchards.

Mr. Dao Van Long, Vice Chairman of the People’s Committee of Đường 10, Bù Đăng district, stated that after learning about the situation, the local government of Đường 10 has conducted field inspections and reported to higher authorities. Local authorities and professional organizations are assisting residents in identifying the cause to develop a treatment plan for the trees as soon as possible.

Faced with the mass death of durian trees, which has caused significant economic losses, farmers are hoping that relevant agencies will quickly find effective solutions to enable them to care for their orchards with peace of mind, thereby contributing to the stability and economic growth of the region.
