China is the largest market for Vietnam

China emerged as Vietnam's largest import market during the first four months of 2024, with the estimated import value reaching 41.6 billion USD.

According to the recently released data from the General Statistics Office, in the first four months of 2024, Vietnam’s merchandise trade balance is estimated to have a trade surplus of USD 8.4 billion (in the same period last year, the trade surplus was USD 7.66 billion).

In which, the domestic economic sector imports a trade deficit of USD 8.24 billion; the sector with foreign investment (including crude oil) exports a trade surplus of USD 16.64 billion.

The General Statistics Office said that in the first four months of this year, the United States was Vietnam’s largest export market, with an estimated value of USD 34.1 billion. China is Vietnam’s largest import market, with an estimated value of USD 41.6 billion.

In the first four months of 2024, the trade surplus to the United States is estimated at USD 29.6 billion, an increase of 21.6% over the same period last year; the trade surplus to the EU is estimated at USD 11.4 billion, an increase of 16.7%; the trade surplus to Japan is USD 209 million, a decrease of 41.8%.

Vietnam’s trade deficit with China was USD 23.6 billion, up 41.4%; the trade deficit with South Korea was USD 8.7 billion, up 2.3%; the trade deficit with ASEAN was USD 3.6 billion, up 47.1%.

The total import value of goods in the first four months of 2024 is estimated at USD 115.24 billion, an increase of 15.4% over the same period last year.

In total, the total export turnover of goods in the first four months of this year is estimated at USD 123.64 billion, an increase of 15% over the same period last year. Notably, there are 21 items with export turnover reaching over USD 1 billion, accounting for 86.4% of total export turnover (with 5 export items over USD 5 billion, accounting for 57.8%).
