“Quality is the Heart of the Durian Brand.”

Dak Lak is the province with the largest durian area in the country, with over 32,700 hectares in 2023 and a yield of over 280,000 tons. The province has 23 packaging facilities and 68 growing areas, spanning more than 2,500 hectares, that have been granted codes by China for export purposes. It is projected that in 2024, Dak Lak’s durian output will surpass 300,000 tons.

Alongside its advantages in production, the durian industry in Dak Lak also faces certain limitations. These include dispersed and fragmented growing areas, a lack of linkage in production, procurement, processing, storage, and consumption of durians, and non-compliance with plant quarantine regulations that are of interest to importing countries.

Dak Lak Durian Ready for Export Market

To meet the demands of the export market, delegates proposed several solutions: further enhancing the management and organizational capabilities of select cooperatives and collaborative groups; effectively managing the codes assigned to growing areas; and intensifying communication efforts to raise farmers’ awareness of quality standards from the very beginning.

Ms. Ngo Tuong Vy, Executive Director of Chanh Thu Fruit Import-Export Corporation, shared her perspective: “We must collaborate through cooperatives and farmer associations to communicate the importance of self-managing their quality standards. This is not a matter of business requirements, but rather, a means of self-protection for the farmers themselves. We can achieve this by practicing good farming and land conservation. Before using any fertilizers or other substances, we should conduct tests to better manage this aspect.”

Addressing the existing challenges and promoting the sustainable development of the durian industry in Dak Lak and Vietnam at large, Mr. Le Thanh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Department of Processing and Market Development under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, emphasized the significance of quality. “Registering and obtaining a certification for a product does not automatically establish a brand,” he asserted. “If we fail to maintain, monitor, and control quality, we will never succeed. The key to building a brand lies in consistently delivering quality. If we aim to establish a brand for Dak Lak’s durian, our focus must be on quality. Without quality, there can be no brand, and Dak Lak needs to bring about changes in this regard.”
