The Soc Trang City Police on the afternoon of July 5th warned residents about a new scam where strange cards with QR codes are being hung on motorcycles and house doors. Scammers are asking people to scan the QR code to receive a cash prize.

According to the police, this is a form of fraud aimed at stealing money from people’s accounts. The police urge residents to be cautious and not to follow the instructions on these cards to prevent financial loss.

Online scams in Vietnam have been on the rise recently, with increasingly sophisticated tactics being employed by fraudsters. According to statistics from the Ministry of Public Security, in 2023, the Vietnam Information Security Portal recorded approximately 13,900 cyber attacks and nearly 16,000 reports of online scams from organizations and businesses, resulting in losses of VND 390,000 billion, equivalent to 3.6% of GDP. The total amount of money scammed from individuals through online means is estimated to be between VND 8,000 and 10,000 billion, a 50% increase compared to 2022.
