The Quang Tri Airport project, a significant development in Vietnam’s central region, has been approved by the Prime Minister for construction through a public-private partnership (PPP). Aiming to meet the growing demand for air transport, the airport will boost political, economic, and social progress while ensuring high mobility for defense, rescue, and security operations in the region.
Located in the communes of Gio Quang, Gio Hai, and Gio Mai in Gio Linh district, the airport spans over 265 hectares with a total investment of more than VND 5,800 billion. Designed to meet ICAO’s 4C standards for civil aviation and military airport grade II, it can accommodate Code E aircraft, serving up to 5 million passengers and 25,500 tons of cargo annually.
With a 50-year implementation period, the project is expected to be completed within 24 months, including construction and investment. The airport is slated to commence operations in July 2026 and will be managed and operated for 47 years and 2 months to recoup the investment.
In late December 2023, the Quang Tri provincial government awarded the investment decision and business registration certificate to the T&T Group and CIENCO4 Joint Venture, marking a significant milestone. Notably, this is Vietnam’s second airport project to be developed through the PPP model, following the success of Van Don Airport in Quang Ninh province.
Mr. Vo Van Hung, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, emphasized the airport’s significance beyond mere transportation infrastructure. He stated that it symbolizes peace, cooperation, and integration, acting as a catalyst for the rapid and sustainable development of the heroic land of Quang Tri.
“Today’s groundbreaking ceremony lays a solid foundation for a brighter future. By 2026, Airbus and Boeing aircraft will soar in the skies over Quang Tri Province, signifying peace and progress,” affirmed Mr. Vo Van Hung.
The airport’s operation will open up the region, boost tourism, facilitate cargo transportation and logistics, and support industrial parks, economic zones, and commercial services. Additionally, it will enhance national defense and security, aid rescue and relief operations, attract domestic and international investors, and become a pivotal infrastructure development in the region.
Quang Tri Airport will seamlessly integrate with existing and planned transportation networks, including the Cam Lo-La Son expressway, National Highway 15D, the trans-Asian road connecting Laos and Thailand, the coastal road linking the East-West Economic Corridor, the Lao Bao-Cam Lo expressway, My Thuy deep-water port, and the My Thuy-Dong Ha-Lao Bao railway. Together, these projects form a comprehensive transportation network, propelling Quang Tri’s socio-economic growth.
