The Great Imposter: Fake Binh Phuoc Cashews Flood the Market

The Vietnam Cashew Association has urged the People's Committee and relevant authorities to take action against the sale of low-quality cashew products and those falsely claiming to originate from Binh Phuoc.

The Binh Phuoc Cashew Association has recently discovered a concerning trend of websites and social media platforms advertising “Binh Phuoc Specialty” cashew products at surprisingly low prices. For instance, they offer 6 boxes of broken cashews (3kg) or 3 boxes of cashews with their shell on (1.5kg) for just VND 100,000 each.

However, upon investigation, the Association confirmed that these cashews are not locally grown in Binh Phuoc but are imported, low-quality cashews from previous harvests. Consuming these products could potentially pose serious health risks to consumers.

This act of mislabeling and selling cashews under the protected geographical indication of “Binh Phuoc Cashews,” which has been in effect since 2018, severely undermines the reputation of reputable cashew businesses and misleads consumers.

In light of this situation, the Binh Phuoc Cashew Association has requested the provincial People’s Committee and relevant authorities to intensify inspections and impose strict penalties on those engaged in the sale and advertising of counterfeit cashew products.

The Association also advises consumers to be cautious when shopping and to prioritize purchasing products with clear origins to safeguard their health.

Back in 2020, the Association had issued a similar statement when individuals were advertising cashew products labeled as “Binh Phuoc” at extremely low prices on social media platforms.

In December 2020, Binh Phuoc authorities seized over 13.2 tons of various types of snacks containing cashews. This included more than 5.8 tons of low-quality, processed cashew nuts that failed to meet food safety standards and were intended for animal feed. The seizure took place at four cashew processing and trading facilities in Bu Dang District and Phuc Long Town.

All four establishments were fined VND 17.5 million each, and the authorities destroyed the entire batch of over 13.2 tons of confiscated food products.
