There have been numerous reports of faulty citizen identification chips in Vietnam, as shared on a Vivo user community social media forum with over 33,000 members. The issue was predominantly observed in high-end Vivo smartphone models such as the X100 Pro, X100 Ultra, and X100S Pro, including the X80 Pro, which is a semi-official model sold in Vietnam, initially priced at VND 29.9 million, on par with the current iPhone Pro Max.

Several users have shared similar experiences in the comments section of the forum posts. One user, Dao Hoang Anh, mentioned that their citizen identification chip stopped working after scanning it with the Vivo X100P. They further added that the chip couldn’t be read by other smartphones, dedicated scanners at banks, or even by the police.
Another user, Tuan Nguyen, expressed his frustration, saying, “Scanning it with my phone ruined the chip. Now I have to go through the hassle of getting my ID remade.”

In response to these reports, Vivo has acknowledged the issue and is currently investigating the matter. NFC, or Near Field Communication, is a wireless communication standard that operates over very short distances, typically requiring direct contact or close proximity.
Unlike Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, NFC interactions are limited to a very short range, usually just a few centimeters. In the case of smartphones and citizen identification cards with chips, the NFC reader is typically located in the phone, while the chip is embedded in the card. However, not all smartphone models are equipped with an NFC reader.
According to expert Le Cong Minh Khoi, as quoted by Vnexpress, smartphones cannot alter the data on citizen identification chips. However, if the NFC emitter in the phone is too strong or the contact duration is too long, it could potentially damage the chip, similar to what can happen when phones are placed near hotel key cards or elevator access cards that use NFC technology.
If users encounter such issues with the aforementioned Vivo smartphone models, they are advised not to attempt any DIY fixes and instead visit a bank branch for assistance with verification and possible chip replacement.
