At present, there is a very limited supply of durian trees in bearing fruit, hence the extremely high prices. Durian of the Monthong variety is priced at over 100,000 VND per kg, while Ri6 is over 70,000 VND per kg. With these prices, each kg of durian yields a profit of 30,000 – 50,000 VND (depending on the type).
Due to the scarcity of durian, most businesses and bases that purchase durian for export in Tien Giang province have closed down or temporarily ceased operations. A few small-scale businesses remain, collecting off-season durian, but these are rare. Many businesses have sent their workers to the provinces of the Central Highlands and Southeast to purchase durian to fulfill partner orders.
Tien Giang province currently has more than 23,000 hectares of specialized durian trees, concentrated in Cai Lay, Cai Be, Cai Lay Town, and Chau Thanh. Last year, most durian gardens in Tien Giang province were highly profitable, earning over 1 billion VND per year, with some gardens yielding up to nearly 2 billion VND per year. Currently, gardeners in Tien Giang province are actively taking care of their durian trees and using the method of covering the roots to control water and induce effective flowering.
Mr. Trinh Van Sy, owner of a 1-hectare durian garden and a fruit trading business in Ngu Hiep commune, Cai Lay district, shared that his garden currently has no durian left, and his wholesale base has been closed. His 43 workers have been sent to Gia Lai for over ten days now to pack durian.
“The price of Monthong durian has reached 100,000 VND per kg. My family’s durian garden is in the stage of spreading fertilizer, preparing to cover the roots this July so that the trees will flower in August and bear fruit in December. This year, the saltwater issue has been safely addressed, so the durian trees are growing well,” said Mr. Sy.
