Hanoi police have been consistently warning citizens about a scam involving impersonation of police officers and requesting the installation of a fake Public Service Software to steal personal information. Despite these warnings, many individuals, especially those less engaged with social media and news outlets, have fallen prey to this scheme.

The scammers’ modus operandi involves calling unsuspecting individuals, pretending to be police officers, and claiming that their citizen identification needs to be updated or fixed due to system errors. They then urge the victims to download the fake Public Service Software, which allows them to take control of their devices and access their banking information and payment apps, resulting in significant financial losses.

Fake Public Service Software

The Hanoi Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Agency in Cau Giay District has initiated legal proceedings in a fraud case employing this tactic. A victim, Mr. T, residing in Cau Giay, reported that he received a call from someone claiming to be a police officer, who instructed him to install the fake Public Service Software. Subsequently, Mr. T discovered a loss of 10 billion VND from his bank account.

In a similar incident in Dong Da District, Hanoi, a victim, Ms. N, born in 1976, fell prey to the same scam. On June 13, 2024, she received a call from an individual claiming to be a Hanoi police officer, who convinced her to install the malicious software. Following the installation, she realized that 500 million VND had been stolen from her bank account, prompting her to report the incident to the Dong Da District Police.

To protect yourself from such scams, the Hanoi Police urge citizens to be vigilant and never install any software or applications upon requests from unknown callers. Installing such fake software gives scammers complete control over your device, allowing them to intercept text messages and calls, and ultimately access your financial accounts and steal your money.

If you encounter any suspicious activity or believe you have been a victim of fraud, it is crucial to report it to the police promptly to prevent further damage and aid in the apprehension of the perpetrators.
