A string of abandoned villas litter the Son Tra peninsula in Da Nang, Vietnam. The once-promising vacation homes now lie empty and forgotten, their potential wasted. Video: Nguyen Thanh |

The Son Tra peninsula is a famous tourist destination in Da Nang. Years ago, the local government granted permits for numerous luxury resort projects to boost tourism. However, many of these projects along Hoang Sa road remain unfinished and abandoned.

Among the abandoned projects on Son Tra is a resort in Bai Trem bay. The developer constructed the villas’ foundations and then halted work, leaving the site to waste away for over a decade.

The villas in Bai Trem bay have been overtaken by nature, creating an eerie scene amidst the lush mountains of Son Tra.

As per the approved plan, the project included 204 plots for resort clusters, 22 luxury villas, a restaurant, and an 18-story 5-star hotel, with a total investment of approximately $20 million.

Son Tra peninsula boasts a prime location with beautiful beaches and mountain views. However, the abandoned villas have left the area in a state of decay and ruin.

In late 2019, the Government Inspectorate identified several violations in land management, forest protection, environmental protection, and construction in relation to the projects on Son Tra peninsula.

Out of the 18 projects approved by the Da Nang People’s Committee, 9 involved natural forest areas (163 hectares) without a clear plan for forest management and protection. Additionally, 7 projects involved land allocation and leasing that violated national defense and security regulations.

Inside the abandoned villas of Son Tra, one finds decay, disrepair, and desolation.

In 2020, the Da Nang People’s Committee tasked the City Military Command with coordinating relevant departments to review and complete the dossiers for defense assessment of the projects on Son Tra peninsula. However, the fate of these projects remains uncertain.

The “super” project, Mercure Son Tra Resort, comprising 22 villas, began construction in 2011. By 2013, over half of the infrastructure was complete, but the project has been stagnant ever since.
