During a trip abroad six years ago, Mr. Nguyen Duy Hien from Vinh Loc Hamlet, Vinh Binh Commune, Cho Lach District, Ben Tre Province, discovered a particularly delicious durian variety, distinct from the local durians.
Intrigued, Mr. Hien brought some seeds back and planted them in his family’s garden. With diligent care and pest control, the trees thrived. Over time, he found them easy to care for, similar to the more common durian varieties grown by local farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hien with his durian trees, named DH.1
Last year, these trees bore a few fruits, but this year, they produced over 20 high-quality durians. The unique characteristics of this variety include golden flesh, flat seeds, fine texture, and sticky, wax-like consistency. The fruits become even stickier as they ripen, without any bitterness, mushiness, or dry texture. With a thin shell, they are easy to peel and have a brittleness index of 36.5% – 39.4%. After harvest, they take 3-4 days to ripen fully, revealing delicious, non-dry flesh that has impressed many locals.

The unique texture and aroma of DH.1 durian’s flesh
Each durian weighs around 2.2 kg on average, with a 75% uniformity rate. They are oblong, with grayish-green skin and a deep yellow flesh. The taste is sweet and fatty, with a subtle aroma, and the texture is non-dry and has minimal fiber. According to Mr. Hien, this durian variety is easy to cultivate and manage, with a high fruit-setting rate.
“This durian variety is exceptionally tasty,” Mr. Hien shared. “The fruits fall from the tree when ripe, making them easy to peel. The flesh is fine, with flat seeds and a wax-like consistency. Even when fully ripe, the fruits don’t become mushy or dry, and they don’t crack open. When the fruits are mature, I cut them and let them ripen naturally for 3-4 days.”

Mr. Nguyen Duy Hien has propagated the variety to meet the planting needs of local farmers.
The Ben Tre Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection assessed Mr. Hien’s durian variety and found it to meet the standards for yield and quality. On June 26, 2024, the Ben Tre Department of Agriculture and Rural Development officially recognized it as a new variety and named it Duy Hien DH.1.
Mr. Hien has successfully propagated eight DH.1 durian trees and has started providing seedlings to other gardeners, contributing to the diversity of durian varieties in the region.
