On July 26, the funeral of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, was solemnly held with national mourning rituals at the National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi. The funeral was also held at the Reunification Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and his hometown in Dong Hoi commune, Dong Anh district, Hanoi.
Politburo member, President To Lam, Head of the Funeral Committee delivered the funeral oration to bid farewell to General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong on his final journey.

Dear compatriots, comrades, and soldiers across the country, and international friends!
Dear family of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong!
Today, with profound emotion and infinite grief, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the National Assembly of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee, together with compatriots, soldiers across the country, overseas Vietnamese, international friends, and the family solemnly organize the funeral and bid farewell to comrade Nguyen Phu Trong – an exceptionally excellent leader, a shining example of studying and following Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, morality, and style. He was a loyal communist with great prestige in the Party, State, and among the people. He fully embodied the qualities, talents, capabilities, and intelligence of the Vietnamese leadership during the renewal period.
His passing is an irreplaceable loss to our Party, Nation, and people. Our country has lost a talented leader; the communist and progressive movement in the world has lost a sharp theorist; international friends have lost a sincere and close comrade and partner; and his family, lineage, and hometown of Dong Hoi have lost an outstanding son.
For nearly 60 years of rich and persistent revolutionary activities, Professor, Dr. Nguyen Phu Trong, with his profound and sharp intellect, has left the entire Party, people, and army with a valuable system of thoughts and theories about the Vietnamese revolutionary path in the new era. With determination and creative application of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts, and with the goals of national independence and socialism, theoretician Nguyen Phu Trong, the Party’s flag of theory, has clarified the theory of socialism and the path to socialism in Vietnam, the role of the Communist Party, the socialist-oriented market economy, etc. This invaluable legacy has strengthened our firm belief in the path to socialism, making an important contribution to the development of the communist movement in the world and the advancement of Marxism-Leninism and Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts in the current era.
With a strategic vision of the international situation in the contemporary world and relentless efforts to contribute to maintaining and ensuring a peaceful and stable environment in the region and the world, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong opened a new chapter in Vietnam’s relations with international partners, promoting friendship between Vietnam and other nations, and enhancing Vietnam’s contributions through various practical commitments and actions. He combined national strength with the strength of the times, propelling our country forward vigorously.
With great inspiration and leadership, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong led the entire Party, people, and army with his intellect, noble humanity and benevolence, strong will and determination, and the character and honor of a communist soldier who devoted his whole life to serving the nation and the people. With the belief that “Honor is the most sacred and precious thing,” the loyal leader Nguyen Phu Trong continuously built our Party to be pure and strong, leading our country and people to successfully implement the renewal policy.
Throughout his revolutionary career, the construction and rectification of the Party and the political system held a particularly important position for comrade Nguyen Phu Trong. Creatively applying Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts on Party building, comrade Nguyen Phu Trong deeply elaborated on the Party’s nature and the construction of the ruling Party from the reality of renewal in Vietnam. From there, together with the Central Committee, he formulated and successfully led the implementation of strategic orientations on Party building and rectification; resolutely and persistently fighting individualism, degeneration in terms of thoughts, morality, and lifestyle, and corruption and negative phenomena within the Party. This was an extremely arduous struggle against the “internal enemy,” making our Party purer and stronger, affirming its vanguard role, intellect, and wisdom, so that our Party is truly “moral and civilized.”
Under his leadership, for the first time, our Party issued a specialized resolution on building and perfecting the Vietnamese socialist law-governed state of the people, by the people, and for the people.
As the President and Chairman of the National Assembly, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong always worried and cared about building a legislative body that is truly the highest power agency of the people, democratic, and representative of the legitimate rights and interests of the people. He aimed to perfect a synchronous, unified, public, transparent, and feasible legal system, creating a solid legal corridor for proactive and deep international integration and the country’s vigorous development.
Imbued with Ho Chi Minh’s thoughts and deeply aware of the important position of culture, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong considered culture as the “soul” of the nation and that “culture still exists when the nation still exists.” As a great cultural figure, he dedicated his heart and made outstanding contributions to building a Vietnamese culture that is advanced, imbued with national identity, and truly the spiritual foundation of society and an important driving force for national development. Under his leadership, after more than 70 years, our Party organized a National Cultural Conference – a milestone that united the thoughts and actions of the entire Party, people, and army, promoting the role of culture and realizing the aspiration to build a prosperous and happy country.
With profound and sensitive political insight, Comrade Nguyen Phu Trong elevated strategic thinking and created a new development for Vietnam’s national defense, security, and foreign affairs. These included thoughts on protecting the Fatherland from the early stages and from afar, maintaining peace to protect the country; always paying attention to building the people’s strength, building a revolutionary people’s army that is streamlined, strong, and absolutely loyal and pure; the army and police united like “two wings of a bird,” like a “sword and shield,” overcoming all difficulties and sacrifices to maintain peace and stability for national development. He promoted the pioneering role of comprehensive diplomacy, forming and effectively leading the new diplomatic art of the times, imbued with the style of the “Vietnamese bamboo” based on the nature of the Vietnamese people, who are “unchanging in nature, capable of adapting to changes,” “harmonious and friendly,” and who value “benevolence over force.” Under his guidance, Vietnam has become a trusted, active, and responsible partner and member on the international stage, deeply integrating into international politics, the world economy, and human civilization.
Running through comrade Nguyen Phu Trong’s thoughts are the people and humanity, wholeheartedly and devotedly serving the people, building a new socialist person, and constantly consolidating unity and unanimity, first and foremost within the Party, national unity, and international solidarity. He always determinedly formulated and led the successful implementation of policies that were in line with the people’s aspirations; steadfastly upholding the standpoint, view, and practice of “the people are the root,” “the people are the subject, the center, and the goal of renewal.” As a true communist, full of righteousness and justice, he always reminded and required the entire Party and political system to “take the highest responsibility for the people, care for the material and spiritual life of the people,” and “closely connect with the people is the rule of existence, development, and the driving force for the Party’s activities.”

Throughout his life, General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong tirelessly dedicated himself to the revolutionary cause of our Party and nation with an unyielding spirit and willpower, facing difficulties and challenges head-on. He fulfilled his responsibilities with revolutionary fervor until his last breath, devoting his whole heart and soul to the Party, the country, and the people. He affirmed a great personality, living a life of dedication to the nation, the Party, and the people. He was a shining example of revolutionary morality, integrity, and purity, with a simple, honest, and virtuous lifestyle, a democratic, dedicated, scientific, and thorough working style, and a consistent match between words and actions. He respected and cherished people and was very close to the people, truly a nucleus that united the intellect and unanimity of the entire Party, people, and army, respected and trusted by cadres, party members, and the people, and highly appreciated by international friends.
We respectfully honor and express our deep gratitude for the great merits and outstanding contributions of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong to the cause of building, developing, and protecting the Vietnamese Fatherland in the renewal period. Acknowledging his exceptional merits and outstanding contributions, the Party and State presented him with the noble title of the Golden Star Order, but above all, he forever belongs to the country and the people.
Dear spirit of comrade Nguyen Phu Trong!
Today, we are here, along with compatriots, soldiers across the country, overseas Vietnamese, and international friends, to bid you a sorrowful farewell as you embark on your eternal journey, joining the glorious history of the heroic and cultural Vietnamese nation. Although you have passed away, your name, career, merits, contributions, talents, and virtues will forever shine in the glorious history of our Party and nation, in the gratitude of cadres, party members, and the people, and in the sentiments of international friends.
Farewell, dear comrade, an excellent leader who embodies the Party’s virtues and personality, the symbol of peace, unity, and progress. The entire Party, people, and army are determined to fulfill your wishes, keeping your words in mind, “If you are a human, be a communist,” wholeheartedly and devotedly serving the nation and the people, resolutely following the path chosen by the Party, Uncle Ho, and previous generations, including you, comrade. We will unite, be unanimous, seize opportunities, overcome challenges, build our Party and political system to be truly pure and comprehensively strong, and bring a warm and happy life to our people, contributing to building a progressive, civilized, and moral world. The legacy of General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong will live forever in the history of Vietnam, inherited and promoted in the cause of renewal, successfully realizing the goal of building a peaceful, independent, united, and prosperous Vietnam with equality, democracy, and civilization, which you cherished and dedicated your life to.
