The King of Fruits: Durian’s Price Drop Leaves Traders Picky

Dak Lak, the country's leader in durian cultivation, is entering the harvest season. However, farmers are concerned about the drop in prices. Ms. Nguyen Thi My, a durian farmer from Hoa Dong, Krong Pak, shared her worries, "The durian pickers are very selective, discarding many subpar fruits. They choose each durian as carefully as they would choose a wife."

Mr. Y Moi Nie from Ea Yong commune, Krong Pac district, Dak Lak province, has been closely monitoring durian prices and the harvesting situation in the area in recent days.

Mr. Y Moi’s household has approximately 70 Dona durian trees, and they expect to harvest over 15 tons of fruit this year. He inquired about durian prices in multiple locations, finding that beautiful, high-quality fruits with golden flesh and mature taste are priced at around VND 70,000 per kg, which is lower than the VND 83,000-89,000 per kg he sold last year.

Aside from price concerns, Mr. Y Moi is also worried about durian trees being attacked by fungi due to the prolonged rainy weather.

According to Mr. Y Moi, heavy rains over the past few weeks have created favorable conditions for the growth of harmful fungi, causing fruit splitting, sap leakage, and fruit rot. Such affected durians will be classified as inferior and sold at a lower grade.

Meanwhile, the durian garden of Ms. Nguyen Thi My, located in Hoa Dong commune, Krong Pac district, has officially been sold to traders at VND 73,000 per kg. However, the durian cutters are very selective, discarding a significant number of fruits. Ms. My anxiously compares their fruit selection process to “choosing a wife.”

Ms. My further shared that this year’s prolonged heavy rains have caused approximately 20% of the durian fruits to be affected by stem and flower fungi, as well as black planthoppers.

Not only are the durians subjected to meticulous scrutiny, but the prices have also dropped by more than VND 10,000 per kg compared to the beginning of the season. As Ms. My’s garden has only undergone the first cutting, she is concerned about potential market fluctuations and weather changes that could further impact the prices in subsequent cuttings.

Mr. Le Anh Trung, Vice President of the Dak Lak Durian Association, confirmed that durian prices have decreased since the beginning of the season.

Specifically, at the start of the season, durian prices exceeded VND 80,000 per kg when purchased directly from gardens. However, as the supply was limited at that time, the prices have now cooled down due to the abundant supply, ranging from VND 70,000 to 75,000 per kg, depending on the quality.

According to the latest statistics, the durian cultivation area in Dak Lak province has surpassed that of Tien Giang province, making it the largest durian-producing region in the country, with nearly 33,000 hectares. Mr. Trung estimates that the total durian yield in Dak Lak province this year will reach nearly 300,000 tons.
