Attracting investment through business performance hand-in-hand with sustainable development strategy
Starting as a spice production facility in Ho Chi Minh City, Masan Group has evolved into a leading consumer and retail conglomerate in Vietnam. With nearly 30 factories and over 3,600 WinMart/WinMart+/WiN retail stores nationwide, the group has made its mark. In June 2024, Masan Group topped the list of 500 leading companies in Southeast Asia for 2024, released by Fortune magazine for the first time. The company boasted revenues of over $3.2 billion in 2023, making it the leading consumer and retail essentials company in Vietnam. The group also excels in attracting foreign capital, especially during the international market congestion phase.
In 2023, Masan Group secured a syndicated loan of up to $650 million from BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Standard Chartered, and United Overseas Bank. In April 2024, Bain Capital, a US-based private investment firm, completed a $250 million equity investment in the group. These transactions underscore the financial community’s confidence in Masan’s business execution capabilities and its sustainable development strategy.
In recent years, in addition to business performance, ESG practices (environmental, social, and governance factors), green growth, and sustainable development have become critical criteria for international investors when evaluating investment decisions in a company.
Masan has integrated ESG into its operations by identifying key themes relevant to its business and value chain. In 2024, the group continues to embed ESG into its activities and business decisions, working towards its 2030 vision of implementing innovative initiatives to ensure alignment with ESG and climate trends.
Sustainable Resource Management
With operations that impact 100 million Vietnamese consumers, Masan has invested in advanced production facilities, utilizing state-of-the-art and environmentally friendly technologies. “When planning any new project, we always consider the potential environmental impacts and develop appropriate mitigation measures before executing the project,” said a representative from Masan Group.
The group’s environmental commitment starts with the most familiar aspects, beginning with caring for the environment around the workplace. Masan’s factories and surrounding areas are greened and provide fresh air. At Masan Consumer’s factories, 20% of the total campus area is allocated for greenery to ensure an eco-friendly workplace. The group’s meat processing complexes, Masan MEATLife, have a green area coverage ranging from 24% to 31% of the total complex area, surpassing local requirements.
To improve energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions, Masan’s factories have implemented several initiatives. For instance, Masan Consumer utilizes rice husks and sawdust to generate renewable energy for its entire production base. This approach not only provides a sustainable and cost-effective energy source but also creates jobs and increases the income of local people. Additionally, Masan Consumer’s consumer goods factories optimize the production process by recovering heat loss during frying and sterilizing products, avoiding heat-altering processes.

“Masan Consumer was awarded the ISO 50001:2018 Energy Management System certification in 2023. This recognition acknowledges our commitment to energy conservation and encourages us to maintain and expand energy-saving measures across all our operations,” the company representative said.
In addition to energy conservation, water management is a particular focus for Masan’s factories. In 2023, Masan Consumer’s total water consumption was recorded at over 123,828 megaliters, compared to nearly 138,402 megaliters in 2022. Water consumption decreased by 11% in 2023. The company’s long-term goal is to reduce water usage by 5 to 10% per unit of production by 2025 through enhanced water recycling measures.
All wastewater from Masan’s factories in Binh Duong, Long An, Hai Duong, Nghe An, Thai Nguyen, and Ha Nam provinces meets Type A standards, the highest level according to Vietnamese standards, and surpasses industry standards.
