The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transportation has recently proposed to the city’s People’s Committee to prioritize investing in the expansion of Ton That Thuyet Street and the construction of a park along Te Canal from now until 2030.

According to the proposal, the expansion of Ton That Thuyet Street and the construction of a park along Te Canal in District 4, with a length of over 3.3 km, will involve widening the road to 25 meters to accommodate four lanes. The total estimated cost is VND 4,500 billion, including VND 3,372 billion for site clearance.

On August 8, VTC News reporters observed that Ton That Thuyet Street is quite narrow, running along the crowded Te Canal with a dense population.

It was observed that Ton That Thuyet Street accommodates a large number of vehicles, including buses and trucks, leading to frequent traffic congestion and overload.

In addition, there are many makeshift markets along Ton That Thuyet Street, with some vendors occupying the roadside.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Kim Thoa, owner of a coffee shop on Ton That Thuyet Street, shared that her business has been impacted by the frequent traffic jams during peak hours. “We hope that the local authorities will soon implement the project to improve transportation and business conditions,” she said.

Along Ton That Thuyet Street, there are many dilapidated and abandoned buildings, schools, and markets, creating an eyesore.

For severely dilapidated and abandoned buildings, authorities have placed warning signs, barriers, and conducted regular inspections to prevent gatherings.

Regarding the expansion of Ton That Thuyet Street and the construction of a park along Te Canal, the Department of Construction has also proposed to the city’s People’s Committee to direct relevant departments and units to consider, balance, and allocate funds for site clearance and compensation for the project.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, approximately 741 households living on Ton That Thuyet Street and along Te Canal will be affected and required to relocate to make way for the urban renovation and park construction.

The project for the expansion of Ton That Thuyet Street and the construction of a park along Te Canal is under the management of the Project Management Unit for Investment Construction in District 4. However, the project has not yet been included in the medium-term investment plan for 2021-2025.

To expedite the implementation of the project, the Department of Construction has proposed that the People’s Committee direct relevant departments and units to complete the investment procedures and submit them to the City People’s Council for approval of the investment policy and inclusion in the medium-term public investment plan for the period of 2021-2025.
