Mention jackfruit, and most people will immediately think of the large, fragrant, and incredibly sweet native and Thai jackfruits commonly found in Vietnam. However, a unique variety of jackfruit has recently captured the attention of locals, who are eager to get their hands on it despite its price tag of four to five times that of Thai jackfruit.

This jackfruit, marketed as “Indian jackfruit,” is advertised on online forums as the “best in the world.” It is distinguished by its small size, fitting comfortably in the palm of an adult’s hand, and its numerous soft spines covering the outer skin.

The Indian jackfruit is known for its ease of peeling when ripe, a feature that sets it apart from other varieties that often require a knife to open. Its flesh is divided into numerous small segments, each packed with a unique sweet and sour flavor and an alluring aroma.

As its popularity surged, so did the price of Indian jackfruit. It is now four to five times more expensive than Thai jackfruit by weight, but due to its small size, each fruit costs only around 20,000 to 30,000 VND, making it affordable for many consumers.

Interestingly, as this variety gained traction online, some people noticed its striking resemblance to a local jackfruit variety called “mit nai” or forest jackfruit, which is commonly found in various provinces across Vietnam. This led to speculations that the Indian jackfruit might be a close relative of the Vietnamese forest jackfruit.

Indian jackfruit is currently available in various places, especially online. Despite some skepticism about its similarity to the local forest jackfruit and whether it justifies its premium price, many remain intrigued and eager to taste this unique variety.
