On August 9, the People’s Committee of Phu Quy island district in Binh Thuan province sent a document to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Binh Thuan Port Authority proposing a solution to the issue of cargo ships from Phan Thiet port to Phu Quy being prohibited from carrying livestock.

For almost two months, due to failure to comply with safety regulations, cargo ships have been banned by the Binh Thuan Maritime Port Authority from transporting cattle and pigs, among other livestock, from the mainland to the island. This has caused a spike in meat prices in the traditional markets of Phu Quy island.

According to the leadership of the People’s Committee of Phu Quy, the ban on transporting livestock from the mainland to the island has not only affected the essential needs of the islanders but has also led to hoarding and price gouging.

Currently, Phu Quy island is experiencing a shortage of fresh meat supply from the mainland, and islanders have to rely on frozen meat products brought in from the mainland.

There used to be two cargo ships transporting goods from Phan Thiet port to Phu Quy island. However, these ships were designed to carry a variety of cargo, and for decades, they have been carrying live animals on their decks while storing essential goods in the hold. Since the Binh Thuan Maritime Port Authority enforced the regulations, these ships have stopped carrying live animals.

The Binh Thuan Maritime Port Authority stated that the temporary ban on transporting livestock to Phu Quy island is aimed at ensuring maritime safety and security and preventing potential accidents.

The authority has requested that cargo ship owners complete the necessary procedures and modify their vessels according to the approved designs before undergoing inspections and obtaining permission to transport livestock to meet the needs of the island’s residents.

Phu Quy island, also known as Thu islet, is located approximately 120 kilometers southeast of Phan Thiet city. With an area of about 18 km2, Phu Quy boasts pristine beauty and includes the main island and smaller islets such as Hon Da Cao, Hon Do, Hon Tranh, and Hon Hai. As of the end of 2023, the population of Phu Quy district, comprising three communes (Tam Thanh, Ngu Phung, and Long Hai), was approximately 29,000 people.
