On August 13, local authorities in Binh Duong Province, Vietnam, announced that they were consolidating the case file for prosecution against Tran Duong Ngoc Hai (born 1995, native of Kien Giang Province) for attempted robbery. The police also continued to investigate the involvement of other potential accomplices.

According to the Binh Duong Provincial Police, their Criminal Police Division, in collaboration with other specialized units, discovered that Hai, using the Facebook account named “Tran Hai,” had joined a private group and attempted to recruit 5-6 individuals to join him in criminal activities with the intention of stealing property.

Hai brazenly posted on social media, seeking to purchase illegal weapons. He then arranged to meet with two unidentified individuals to discuss robbing a bank.

The group agreed to buy fake guns and create Molotov cocktails with gasoline. However, one of the accomplices did not show up on the day of the planned robbery. Desperate, Hai and the remaining accomplice decided to carry out the robbery at a bank they had previously scouted.

Tran Duong Ngoc Hai and the confiscated evidence

On the evening of August 12, the pair arrived at a bank branch in An Phu Ward, Thu An City, but seeing a large number of customers, they decided to wait until the crowd thinned out before entering.

However, their suspicious behavior drew the attention of a police patrol, who stopped to question them. A search revealed that Hai was carrying a knife, two fake guns, two Molotov cocktails, and two pairs of gray fabric gloves. He was immediately taken into custody.

During police interrogation, Hai confessed that he was unemployed, had no fixed residence, and had lost money investing in cryptocurrencies and online gambling, leaving him in a desperate financial situation. This led him to research bank robbery methods online.

Hai also admitted to borrowing his girlfriend’s motorbike, pawning it for 7 million VND, and then lying to her about it being stolen.

The DÄ© An City Police have issued an emergency arrest warrant for Tran Duong Ngoc Hai, and the case is being processed according to legal procedures.
