On August 13, the General Department of Market Management (GDMM, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade) revealed that many businesses in the market, despite not meeting the requirements to operate as supermarkets, have arbitrarily used the term “supermarket” on their signage to attract customers.
This practice has negatively impacted properly-operated supermarkets and caused confusion among consumers.
Market Management Team 5 of the Market Management Department of Ha Tinh province conducted an inspection of a business operated by Ms. N.T.H.H. (address: No. 24, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Duc Tho town, Duc Tho district, Ha Tinh province).
The team discovered that the business’s signage included the words “Huong Giang Supermarket.” However, this business did not meet the standards set by the Minister of Trade (now the Minister of Industry and Trade) for the issuance of supermarket and trade center regulations.
Specifically, the business failed to provide parking and restroom facilities for customers commensurate with the scale of a supermarket; it also lacked facilities for storing personal belongings, services for people with disabilities, and did not meet the minimum area requirements (the business’s operating area was only 200 square meters).
During the inspection, Ms. N.T.H.H. admitted that her business operated as a small-scale household enterprise, had not been classified as a supermarket, and did not meet the standards to offer a wide range of products as a supermarket. She acknowledged that the use of the term “supermarket” on the signage was intended to attract customers.
The inspection team from Market Management Team 5 issued an administrative violation report and proposed a fine of VND 7.5 million against the business for the violation of “Naming a business as a supermarket without meeting the prescribed standards.”
‘King of spenders’ Phan Minh Thong warns of ‘shocking’ changes in the US market from a $500,000 pho bowl perspective.
“In the US, a bowl of pho costs about $15-18, plus a $20 tip (around 500,000 Vietnamese dong). Compared to Vietnam, where breakfast in Saigon or Hanoi costs around 50,000 dong per meal, and a plate of banh cuon with all the toppings in Hai Phong costs 20,000 dong,” Mr. Thong recounted.
