According to SCMP, premium electric vehicle manufacturer Zeekr Intelligence Technology, a subsidiary of Geely, has unveiled its latest battery technology, which enables cars to travel 500 kilometers with just a 10.5-minute charge.

In a statement released on August 13, the company announced that its upgraded lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery, dubbed the Golden Battery, is equipped in Zeekr’s 007 electric sedan, supporting ultra-fast 800V charging and delivering exceptional performance and reliability to its owners. The 75 kWh battery, when fully charged, enables the car to travel an impressive 682 kilometers.

Zeekr stated, “With optimized materials and upgraded technology, the new battery will achieve faster charging speeds than the existing nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries. This is a new achievement of Zeekr’s electronic research and development team.”

According to industry data, NCM batteries are approximately 30% more expensive to produce than LFP batteries but offer electric vehicles a longer range on a single charge.

Chen Jinzhu, executive director of Shanghai Mingliang Auto Service Consulting, commented, “Zeekr’s latest battery and technology showcase how Chinese electric vehicle assemblers are challenging traditional automakers. The higher penetration of electric vehicles has encouraged many manufacturers to upgrade their technology.”

Zeekr has established over 500 fast-charging stations across China, totaling more than 2,700 charging stations. These fast-charging facilities will support 800V charging, while most domestic batteries and charging infrastructure support 400V.

Zeekr has employed over 1,000 engineers and spent three years developing its high-performance battery. The automaker announced in late 2023 that the Golden Battery, produced in a factory in Quzhou, eastern Zhejiang Province, is the world’s first mass-produced 800V ultra-fast-charging LFP battery.

The Zeekr 007 model, equipped with the latest LFP battery, starts at 209,900 Chinese yuan (approximately $29,303), unchanged from the previous version. The car requires a 15-minute charge to achieve a 500-kilometer driving range. The company stated that it would start delivering the new 007 sedans on August 14.
