The global timber market is witnessing robust growth, with a surging demand for high-quality and sustainable wood products. Vietnam is one of the leading players in this market, ranking 5th in the world for wood and wood product exports, reaching over 150 countries and territories. The UNECE report in 2021 also highlighted the significant increase in international imports of wooden furniture in recent years. While China and Vietnam account for over 50% of global furniture production, they are now facing stricter regulations when exporting to major markets.

With the rise of sustainable consumption trends, all wood-importing markets are tightening their conditions related to “green” factors – from green production and trade to green growth, strictly adhering to international green standards such as the proposed Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) by the European Commission (EC). This is no longer a voluntary requirement but a mandatory condition for businesses aiming to expand their exports globally, including Vietnamese enterprises.

Green transformation is the key to helping Vietnamese businesses rapidly meet global green standards, elevating the position of Vietnamese wood products in the world, and seizing new business opportunities based on these new standards.

According to Mr. Tran Dang Hoa, Chairman of FPT IS, at the event to kickstart the green transformation project for Tran Duc Group: “With the trend of green consumers, people are increasingly concerned about the origin of products, and import-export activities, in general, also have strict requirements for sustainable development. Therefore, enterprises need to make calculations to build effective emission reduction plans. However, in Vietnam, we observe that this process is mainly done manually. Globally, enterprises prioritize the application of technology, and Vietnam is also ready with suitable technology solutions like VertZéro to digitize and automate the emission inventory process, replacing manual measurement processes prone to errors and fraud. The application of technology is an important foundation for the green transformation practice of enterprises to be effective and meet global standards.”

Recognizing this reality and assuming the role of a technology partner in digital and green transformation, FPT IS has officially launched the ebook “Green Transformation in the Wood Industry.” This publication serves as a comprehensive guidebook, providing valuable insights for businesses on market dynamics, development requirements in sustainable wood exploitation and production, and appropriate green transformation initiatives tailored to the industry’s characteristics.

The ebook is exclusively compiled by FPT IS’s team of experts

The ebook covers the following key topics: (1) Market context and trends in wood production and consumption globally and in Vietnam; (2) Analysis of opportunities and challenges for Vietnamese enterprises in the equation of transparent and efficient wood exploitation and processing; (3) Lessons learned from global and Vietnamese enterprises in their journey towards green transformation; (4) Professional recommendations and technology solutions from FPT IS to accompany businesses in their green transformation journey, fostering sustainable development.

Notably, FPT IS presents case studies of exemplary enterprises worldwide and in Vietnam that have successfully prepared for green transformation. For instance, the global furniture group Miller Knoll has implemented green solutions in its production and business operations, preventing 300 tons of plastic waste from entering the ocean in 2023. In Vietnam, Tran Duc Group – a leading provider of sustainable material solutions for architecture, construction, and interior and exterior design – has applied FPT IS’s VertZéro greenhouse gas inventory solution across its entire enterprise. This has elevated their “world-class” status regarding Net-zero production and business practices, positioning them to conquer the stringent standards of the international market and lead in new business opportunities.

The “Green Transformation in the Wood Industry” ebook is exclusively researched and analyzed based on 17 leading statistical reports and scientific studies from organizations like FAO, the European Commission, and UNEP, along with FPT IS’s practical project experience in green transformation for wood industry enterprises, specifically, and Vietnamese enterprises, in general.

Currently, FPT IS is a pioneer in providing technology solutions to accompany the government and businesses in achieving the Net Zero 2050 goal. The company is collaborating with international partners such as the Japanese Carbon Credit Platform (Carbon EX) and Faeger, a Japanese company specializing in carbon-oriented agricultural development. FPT IS also works with global ESG experts to offer suitable green transformation roadmaps and solutions for businesses.
