The Department of Transportation has proposed that the city allocate VND 225 billion to widen sidewalks and medians on seven major roads in the city from 2024 to 2027.
The seven roads include Giảng Võ, Láng Hạ, Lê Văn Lương, Tố Hữu, Hoàng Đạo Thúy, Hoàng Minh Giám, and Khuất Duy Tiến. These roads experience extremely high traffic volume and frequent congestion during peak hours.
Giảng Võ, Láng Hạ, Lê Văn Lương, and Tố Hữu, in particular, are part of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system, a cross-city transport axis, and see a high volume of vehicles entering and exiting the central area, especially during rush hours.
Traffic surveys on the BRT route from Cát Linh to Yên Nghĩa revealed that at intersections and terminals, especially during peak hours, the number of vehicles exceeded the design capacity by 1.7 to 4 times, causing severe congestion. In the morning, traffic flows from Yên Nghĩa to Cát Linh, and in the afternoon, it flows in the opposite direction.
The Giảng Võ – Láng Hạ – Lê Văn Lương – Tố Hữu route is over 8.5 km long, with a central median ranging from 3 to 7 meters wide (the initial section of Giảng Võ does not have a median). All four routes have three lanes in each direction, with one lane dedicated to BRT and two mixed-use lanes.
Widening these roads, especially the BRT route, will improve traffic flow, reduce travel time, and help alleviate traffic congestion.
Therefore, the Department of Transportation believes that investing in this project and improving the infrastructure and traffic organization at critical intersections and roads (phase 1) will help reduce traffic congestion.
