Since the launch of the latest Mazda3 at the end of 2018, all subsequent global names from the Japanese brand have been SUVs. These include new versions of old SUV lines and an entirely new team, from the CX-50 to the CX-90, using an exclusive rear-wheel-drive chassis.
Explaining Mazda’s focus on SUVs and the “temporary” disregard for other segments, Mazda Australia’s marketing director, Alastair Doak, said the company’s lineup purely reflects market demand. “You have to follow and adapt to the market, and the demand for SUVs is currently very high,” he shared.

“If the market changes, Mazda will continue to adapt with its own changes,” the leader added. In addition, the company still has old lines waiting for upgrades, such as the BT-50 pickup, Mazda6 (and soon the EZ-6), Mazda3, and Mazda2. The Mazda MX-5 Miata—Mazda’s famous small sports car—is also still available in some markets.
On the other hand, the team has gradually said goodbye to the CX-8, CX-9, and electric MX-30.
Although Mazda rarely launches new cars other than SUVs, it still has a much more diverse lineup than many of its compatriots. Brands like Nissan and Mitsubishi have gradually removed non-SUV or pickup models from their lineups to prioritize resources for hot segments.

In terms of the number of SUVs on the market, Mazda is probably second only to Toyota. The world’s number one brand owns too many cars from all segments, from the Raize, Yaris Cross, Corolla Cross, C-HR, RAV4, Kluger/Crown, Prado, and Land Cruiser to the bZ4X and Fortuner.
In the coming months, Mazda will introduce the Mazda EZ-6—the spiritual successor to the previous Mazda6 sedan—to users outside of China. Positioned in the mid-to-large sedan segment, the car promises to offer pure electric and electric options with engine support. After this project, Mazda’s next big name could be the new CX-5, which is expected to be released in 2025–2026.
