On August 20, the People’s Court of Kien Giang province opened a first-instance trial and sentenced Tran Van Canh (born 1985, residing in To Chau ward, Ha Tien city) to 16 years in prison for “Abuse of trust to appropriate property.”
According to the indictment, Tran Van Canh used to be the Director of Tran Le Phat Kien Giang Limited Company, operating in the field of construction of residential buildings in Phu Cuong urban area, An Hoa ward, Rach Gia city.

From 2017 to 2019, Canh borrowed money from many people in Rach Gia city and Ha Tien city, citing reasons such as paying workers, purchasing construction materials, and refinancing bank loans. He also invited people to contribute capital for business ventures. As Canh owned a company, many people trusted and handed over their money to him.
However, by April 2020, Canh was unable to repay the debts and fled the locality with the intention of appropriating the funds. The total amount he embezzled from nine victims amounted to nearly VND 6.1 billion.
In addition to the 16-year prison sentence, the Kien Giang Provincial Court also ordered the defendant to return the aforementioned amount to the nine victims.
