According to the Vietnam Aviation Administration, in July, Vietnam Airlines operated 11,066 flights, VietJet Air 10,551 flights, Bamboo Airways 1,423 flights, Pacific Airlines 339 flights, VASCO 709 flights, and Vietravel 661 flights.

Of these, 15,635 flights of Vietnamese carriers took off on time, accounting for 63.2%, continuing to decrease compared to the previous month (69.3%).

There were 9,114 delayed flights, accounting for 36.8%, an increase of over 6% compared to the previous month (in June, 30.7% of flights of Vietnamese carriers were delayed).

The percentage of delayed flights by carrier was as follows: Vietnam Airlines 23.4%, VietJet Air 55.7%, Pacific Airlines 21.2%, VASCO 16.2%, Bamboo Airways 23.8%, and Vietravel Airlines 19.2%.

July saw an increase in the percentage of delayed flights. This was the peak summer month, with the aviation industry increasing capacity to meet the high travel demand, especially on flights from major cities to tourist destinations.

The main reason for the late take-off in July 2024 was the late arrival of aircraft and the airlines.

According to the Vietnam Aviation Administration, the two main reasons for the late departure of flights in July 2024 remained late arrival of aircraft (58.8% of delayed flights) and airlines (32.5%).

The remaining reasons given by the aviation authorities were weather, air traffic management, equipment, and services at the airport, and other reasons.

Also in July, 116 flights were canceled, accounting for 0.5%. The main reasons for the cancellations were operational (62.1% of canceled flights), commercial (24.1%), technical, weather, and other reasons.

In the first seven months, the on-time performance was 73.7%, and the delayed performance was 26.3%. The percentage of delayed flights by carrier was as follows: Vietnam Airlines 17.1%, VietJet Air 37.6%, Pacific Airlines 32.6%, VASCO 16.2%, Bamboo Airways 17.9%, and Vietravel Airlines 16.9%.

Airfares for the September 2nd Holiday Cool Down

With the upcoming September 2nd holiday, Vietnamese carriers have planned to increase the number of flights on their operated routes, especially on domestic tourist routes.

The carriers will operate a total of 4,257 flights, averaging 840 flights/day, up 3% from the previous holiday week and up 3.5% from the same period in 2023.

Of these, the average number of domestic flights is 600 flights/day, up 5% from the previous holiday week and up 2.8% from the same period in 2023; the average number of international flights is 241 flights/day, down 2% from the previous holiday week, and up 5.1% from the same period in 2023.

For domestic flight operations, the North-South trunk route (connecting the three major cities: Hanoi – Danang – Ho Chi Minh City) will see an increase in the number of flights, with an average of 241 flights/day, up 8% from the previous holiday week and up 14.9% from the same period last year.

Airfares for the September 2nd holiday have decreased significantly compared to the April 30th-May 1st holiday in 2024.

According to a survey of fare data on August 20, airfares during the National Day holiday on September 2nd increased by about 20% compared to normal days before the holiday.

On the Hanoi – Ho Chi Minh City route, the highest fare recorded was about VND 2.6 million/way on Vietnam Airlines, offered on August 30 during the daytime (including a meal), up 8% from a week earlier (August 23); for the same flight time, Vietjet Air’s fare was about VND 2.3 million/way, up 25% from a week earlier.

When compared to the peak holiday period of April 30th-May 1st, 2024, despite also being a peak period, airfares for the September 2nd holiday have decreased significantly and maintained a stable pace during the summer.

According to the Ministry of Transport, airfares for basic economy class on domestic routes during this period were 40%-60% lower than the maximum regulated rate.

In February 2024, Vietnamese airlines carried out 24,711 flights, an increase of approximately 3,300 flights compared to previous months, according to information from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam.
