Vietnam’s Civil Aviation Authority reports a 20% increase in airfares during the upcoming National Day holiday compared to regular pre-holiday rates.

Inter-Provincial Bus Services Witness a Surge in Trips

According to the Hanoi Bus Station Joint Stock Company, this year’s National Day holiday extends over four consecutive days and falls just before the new academic year begins, leading to a surge in travel and recreational demands among the public. It is anticipated that passenger traffic will be concentrated in provinces boasting tourist attractions, scenic spots, and entertainment options.

Hanoi Bus Station Joint Stock Company estimates that passenger and vehicle numbers will surge from the afternoon of August 30 and August 31, dip to normal levels on September 1 and the morning of September 2, and then climb again from the afternoon of September 3 and September 4. At the Giap Bat Bus Station, the highest number of passengers during the peak days is expected to reach 20,000 per day, marking a 350% increase compared to regular days, with the majority traveling to Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, and Thanh Hoa. Meanwhile, the Gia Lam Bus Station foresees around 5,000 passengers per day during the peak, a 250% jump from regular days, with popular destinations including Hai Phong, Quang Ninh, and Bac Giang. As for the My Dinh Bus Station, the number of passengers is predicted to reach 22,000 per day during the peak, a rise of over 350% compared to regular days, with the majority of trips headed to Hoa Binh, Ha Giang, Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Dien Bien, Son La, Lai Chau, Quang Ninh, and Cao Bang.

Airfares Witness a 20% Uptick

In contrast, the aviation industry has been consistently announcing increased flight operations during the holiday period. As per the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, from August 30 to September 3, airlines will collectively operate 4,257 flights in total, averaging 840 flights per day, marking a 3% increase compared to the previous week’s holiday and a 3.5% rise year-on-year.

The Hanoi-Danang-Ho Chi Minh City route remains the busiest domestic route, with an average of 241 flights per day, an 8% increase compared to the week before the holiday and a 14.9% jump year-on-year.

Domestic tourism routes (to destinations such as Vinh, Binh Dinh, Dalat, Nha Trang, and Phu Quoc) and routes from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City to other provinces are also being prioritized by airlines, with an average of 171 flights per day on domestic tourism routes, a 2% increase compared to the week before the holiday.

According to a survey of airfare data by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, prices during the National Day holiday period are about 20% higher than regular days. For the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route, the highest fare observed was approximately VND 2.6 million one-way for Vietnam Airlines, recorded on August 30 during daytime hours (including a meal), an 8% increase compared to the previous week (August 23). For the same travel period, Vietjet Air’s fares were around VND 2.3 million one-way, a 25% increase week-on-week. On the Hanoi-Nha Trang route, airlines advertised fares ranging from VND 2.4 to 3 million one-way, a roughly 24% increase compared to the week before the holiday…

The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam advises passengers traveling by air to book their tickets in advance to secure better pricing options and actively monitor their flight schedules and plan their journeys to airports to avoid potential congestion or inconvenience due to flight delays.
