The 55.3-km-long Vung Ang-Bung highway project, which runs through Ha Tinh and Quang Binh provinces, broke ground in January 2023. After more than a year of round-the-clock construction, the project has now substantially completed the most critical phase of foundation and roadbed construction.

Several sections have been paved with asphalt layers, preparing for the final stages of construction using the “rolling” approach.

The project is currently racing against time, with construction taking place day and night to expedite progress and avoid the annual rainy season in Central Vietnam, which typically occurs from October to December.

Along with road paving, several sections of the project also involve constructing retaining walls and planting grass to enhance the landscape and protect the road infrastructure from erosion.

The section of the Vung Ang-Bung highway project that includes a bridge over the Ky Anh district in Ha Tinh province has completed road and bridge construction.

The third bridge over the river at KM 575+417 of the Vung Ang-Bung highway project has recently been joined, and construction of the finishing touches is underway.

According to the Project Management Unit 6 of the Ministry of Transport (the investor), the project is currently focusing on road paving. If the weather remains dry, this phase is expected to be completed within the next 1-2 months, after which they will proceed with installing road signs, street lights, and other safety equipment.

Sections of the Vung Ang-Bung highway project are in the final stages of asphalt paving, taking shape.

The Vung Ang-Bung highway, spanning over 55 km, traverses two provinces: Ha Tinh (nearly 13 km) and Quang Binh (over 42 km). The total investment for this project exceeds VND 12,500 billion. In the first phase, the highway is designed with four lanes, a 17-meter-wide roadbed, and a speed limit of 80 km/h for automobiles.

Speaking to Tien Phong, a leader from the Department of Investment Management and Construction, Ministry of Transport, shared that the North-South Expressway in the Eastern Region, Phase 2, currently comprises four sub-projects in the Central region, from Ha Tinh to Quang Nam. Among these, the Vung Ang-Bung project has the highest construction volume, reaching over 62.2%. This project is outpacing the overall construction progress of the 12 sub-projects of the North-South Expressway in Phase 2 and is expected to open to traffic by April 30, 2024, ahead of the six-month deadline.
