COCA-COLA: A 30-YEAR JOURNEY IN VIETNAM

Over three decades, Coca-Cola Vietnam has thrived with three manufacturing plants in Hanoi, Danang, and Ho Chi Minh City, and another one under construction in Long An. Coca-Cola currently serves seven market regions through six distribution centers, reaching over 800,000 retail outlets nationwide. The company provides direct employment to approximately 4,000 employees in Vietnam and indirectly creates six to eight times more jobs through its supply chain activities.

“Bottles for the World” program has been officially launched for the second year.

With a strong commitment to developing human resources, Coca-Cola has consistently been recognized by Anphabe as one of the “Best Companies to Work For” from 2018 to 2023.

Mr. Leonardo Garcia, General Director of Coca-Cola Vietnam and Cambodia, shared, “As we commemorate three decades in Vietnam, Coca-Cola is honored to have become an integral part of Vietnamese consumers’ lives. We are proud to offer high-quality beverage products and always strive to conduct our business responsibly, creating positive value for the economy while contributing positively to the communities in which we operate.”

SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY SUPPORT COMMITMENTS

For 30 years, Coca-Cola has been committed to responsible business operations and contributing to local communities in Vietnam. Their sustainability efforts in the country focus on Packaging, Water Management, Climate Action, and Community Support. Through their “World Without Waste” strategy, Coca-Cola aims to collect and recycle the equivalent of 100% of its packaging by 2030 and use at least 50% recycled material in its packaging. This strategy has also led to impressive environmental results.

Firstly, in 2022, Coca-Cola bottles in Vietnam started being made from 100% recycled rPET plastic, excluding the caps and labels.

Secondly, to support and promote collection and recycling solutions, Coca-Cola Vietnam is a founding member of PRO Vietnam (Packaging Recycling Organization Vietnam). Along with leading companies, recycling units, and government agencies, they are working to improve local packaging collection and recycling, building a greener and cleaner Vietnam.

Coca-Cola has also collaborated with The Ocean Cleanup in Vietnam to deploy the Interceptorâ„¢ river waste interception system on the Can Tho River to prevent plastic waste from reaching the ocean.

Additionally, Coca-Cola Vietnam has partnered with VECA, a waste collection app, to facilitate PET plastic bottle recycling in Ho Chi Minh City. This allows consumers to schedule pickups and earn rewards.

With support from The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF), the company’s global charitable arm, 39 water filtration systems have been installed in 39 high schools in Danang and surrounding areas over the past six years, benefiting thousands of students, teachers, and local residents.

TCCF has also maintained a 10-year partnership with WWF Vietnam to restore water resources in Tram Chim National Park. Furthermore, Coca-Cola collaborates with the Vietnam Red Cross to support COVID-19 response, provide emergency flood relief in Danang in 2022, and assist those in need during the Tet holiday.

CONTINUING THE “BOTTLES FOR THE WORLD” PROGRAM

Following the success of the first year, Coca-Cola is extending the “Bottles for the World” program into 2024. This initiative aims to inspire consumers, especially the youth, to sort and recycle used bottles and cans.

For the first time, Coca-Cola Vietnam has partnered with BOTOL to install bottle and can collection machines in residential areas and universities in Ho Chi Minh City.

In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, Coca-Cola Vietnam has joined forces with BOTOL to install bottle and can collection machines in residential areas and universities in Ho Chi Minh City. The collected bottles and cans will be processed for recycling. The 2024 “Bottles for the World” program features a dedicated portal on the Zalo app, with attractive reward mechanics, to encourage widespread participation and leverage the power of the community for more effective recycling.

Mr. Le Ngoc Tuan, Head of the International Cooperation Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, shared that Vietnam has committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and is currently engaged in global negotiations to address plastic pollution. The government is also encouraging and implementing a circular economy model to meet environmental and climate goals. Coca-Cola’s sustainability strategy aligns with and contributes to these objectives.

“We appreciate Coca-Cola’s efforts and look forward to more businesses joining hands with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and other ministries to achieve sustainability and economic prosperity while contributing to global efforts,” emphasized Mr. Tuan.
