The Quest for City Status: Eight Provinces Aim High

By 2030, it is envisioned that 8 provinces will become centrally-controlled municipalities. These include Thua Thien Hue, Khanh Hoa, Bac Ninh, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong, and Binh Duong. This transformation aims to foster economic growth and development, bringing these regions to the forefront of Vietnam's progress.

The Prime Minister has issued Decision No. 891/QD-TTg approving the Master Plan for urban and rural development for the period 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050.

According to the plan, there are 5 centrally-controlled municipalities: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City (expected to become a special municipality by 2030), Hai Phong, Can Tho, and Da Nang (expected to become a Type I city by 2030).

Eight provinces are oriented to become centrally-controlled cities, including Thua Thien Hue, Khanh Hoa, Bac Ninh, Ba Ria – Vung Tau, Quang Ninh, Ninh Binh, Hai Duong, and Binh Duong (expected to become Type I cities by 2030).

The Master Plan lists 42 Type I cities, including 11 in the Red River Delta region, 5 in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, 7 in the North Central and Coastal region, 3 in the Central Highlands region, 5 in the Southeast region, and 11 in the Mekong Delta region.

In the Red River Delta region, by 2030, several cities are expected to become Type I cities, including Bac Ninh, Ha Long, Cam Pha, Uong Bi, Mong Cai, Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Nam Dinh, and Phu Ly.

The decision also covers 50 Type II cities, with 10 in the Red River Delta region, 11 in the Northern Midland and Mountainous region, 11 in the North Central and Coastal region, 3 in the Central Highlands region, 8 in the Southeast region, and 7 in the Mekong Delta region.

According to this list, the Red River Delta region includes cities such as Vinh Yen, Phuc Yen, Tu Son, Dong Trieu, Chi Linh, My Hao, and Van Giang.
