Pre-owned Cars: In High Demand

As of April 2024, the used car market has experienced a positive shift, with a notable increase in consumer demand. This surge in interest has led to a revival of car dealerships, with many reopening their doors and new businesses entering the market.

According to used car dealers, the two most stimulating times for the market’s recovery this year were the April 30th and September 2nd holidays. Many people chose to purchase used cars during these periods, as it offered a more cost-effective option for their travel, family visits, and tourism plans.

Ms. Van Thi Mai Hanh, owner of Auto Truong Phat in Ho Chi Minh City, shared that her dealership sold only 10 used cars per month last year. However, sales have doubled this year. “The supply of used cars this year is of better quality, and there are newer models available. Many owners faced pressure from bank loan repayments and were forced to sell their vehicles. As a result, buyers can easily find well-maintained cars that are only one or two years old,” said Ms. Hanh.

Many “gently used” cars are available at used car dealerships.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Hien, owner of the Oto Hien system in Ho Chi Minh City, noted that the continuous decrease in new car prices has significantly impacted used car prices. Many “gently used” models, some only a year or two old or even just a few months old, have seen substantial price reductions of 150-200 million VND. Therefore, if customers are knowledgeable and discerning, buying a used car can offer significant savings while still ensuring quality. “Customers nowadays tend to prefer newer models to ensure better condition. Higher vehicles are in higher demand due to their practicality, spaciousness, and ease of navigation during the rainy season,” said Ms. Hien.

In reality, seven-seater cars are more popular than four-seater ones. With just 500-600 million VND, consumers can own desirable cars like the Innova, Rush, CX-5, and CR-V. These prices are slightly lower than last year’s.

Used car dealers attribute the market’s vibrancy to consumers’ anticipation of a 50% reduction in registration fees for new domestically produced and assembled cars. However, as the policy implementation took too long, many opted to purchase used cars instead.
