On August 30, the Quang Ninh provincial Public Security Investigation Agency announced the conclusion of an investigation into a case involving 14 defendants charged with various crimes, including counterfeiting, possessing, transporting, and circulating counterfeit money, forging documents, using forged documents, and fraud.
The investigation revealed that, in late June 2024, Nguyen Van Dai (30 years old) and Hong Tuan Thanh (21 years old), both from Yen Yen district, Nam Dinh province, conspired to rent a location in Hanoi to set up a production line for counterfeit documents.
To evade detection, the perpetrators used fake ID cards to open bank accounts and virtual social media profiles to conduct their illicit business of selling fake documents. Dai and Thanh then hired Do Van Hai (26 years old), Tran Quang Liem (21 years old), and Trinh Quang Truong (24 years old), all from Yen Yen district, Nam Dinh province, as intermediaries. These individuals advertised and sought out customers through social media, collected their information, and forwarded it to Dai and Thanh for document forgery. They then delivered the fake documents to the customers, profiting from the price difference.
This group transacted with numerous clients, including Nguyen Van Huan (41 years old, from Hai Phong city) and Nguyen Thi Hai Ninh (33 years old, from Quang Ninh province), who ordered fake land-use right certificates to commit crimes.
In late July 2023, Le Ba Toan (31 years old, from Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) initiated contact with Nguyen Van Dai, Hong Tuan Thanh, and Vu Tien Dat (24 years old, from Yen Yen district, Nam Dinh province) to produce counterfeit 500,000 VND banknotes and set up a specialized counterfeiting operation in a rented location in Hanoi.
To distribute the fake currency, Toan hired Hoang Trung Hoa (27 years old) and Vi Van Ninh (21 years old), both from Tien Du district, Bac Ninh province. They delivered the counterfeit money to Nguyen Xuan Thiep, Phan Manh Hung in Quang Ninh, Nguyen Tung Bach in Hanoi, and several other customers across various provinces and cities.
According to the investigation’s conclusion, the accused produced 126 million VND in counterfeit 500,000 VND banknotes, successfully spent over 80 million VND of it, and profited by more than 100 million VND.
