On September 2nd, many traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Phu Lam (District 6), Ba Chieu (Binh Thanh District), and Tan Dinh (District 1), experienced a similar lack of customers and sluggish sales.

At Phu Lam Market, stalls selling clothing, shoes, and other goods had mostly sellers with no buyers in sight.

“I’ve imported a variety of fresh produce from Da Lat and Hanoi to cater to my customers, but there have been very few visitors to the market during the holiday period. If I can’t sell the perishable items, I’ll have to throw them away, which could result in significant losses. It’s a worrying situation, and even staying open until evening hasn’t improved sales,” said Ms. Minh, a concerned vendor at Phu Lam Market.

Most of the shops at An Dong Market (District 5) were closed for the holiday. Disappointed, Ms. Nhi (36 years old), who came to the market from Binh Tan District to shop, had to leave empty-handed. “I took advantage of the holiday to go shopping at the market, but I didn’t realize that the vendors would also be on holiday,” she said.

Ms. Binh, a rare open stall in An Dong Market during the holiday, shared that the market has been quiet, and with the holiday, it became even quieter. As a result, most vendors decided to close their stalls temporarily, as there were very few potential customers.

Vendors at Pham Van Hai Market (Tan Binh District) were also hoping for customers. Many stalls selling vegetables, meat, and other goods were left vacant.

“These days, customers prefer to shop at supermarkets or online, which has made business at the market very slow,” shared a vendor.

The vendors eagerly greeted potential customers as they walked by. Ms. Hoa, a children’s clothing vendor, was thrilled to have a customer stop by and browse her selection. After some bargaining, she successfully sold a set of clothes for VND 120,000. “I’m glad to have a customer today. It was even quieter yesterday. I sat here all day without anyone showing interest. Holidays and festive seasons tend to be slower for us,” she shared.
